Warm-up In one or two sentences, describe what type of person “Teddy” Roosevelt was.

“Teddy” Roosevelt was a lively individual with a huge personality that commanded everyone’s attention; he also loved nature and the outdoors.

Roosevelt was suspicious of big business and revived the use of the Sherman Anti-trust Act.

Roosevelt promised Americans a “Square Deal.”

Taft was not a skilled politician and alienated Progressives. After two terms Roosevelt refused to run for presidency again and endorsed William Howard Taft as he ran for president. Taft was not a skilled politician and alienated Progressives.

Roosevelt became infuriated with Taft’s performance Roosevelt became infuriated with Taft’s performance. So, Roosevelt formed a third party, Bull Moose Party, and ran for president against Taft and Wilson. Since the Republican Party was split, Democratic Woodrow Wilson easily won the presidency.

Federal Trade Commission Act Created to further protect consumers against unfair business practices by corporations.

During the progressive Era, public attitudes toward unions began to change. One event that contributed to this change was the fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, which killed 146 workers.

Soon after this tragedy, Congress passed Legislation sympathetic to unions. Department of Labor: post to study the problems of labor, collect statistics and enforce federal labor laws
