Rusting and Corrosion – Outcomes Describe rusting. List three methods of rust prevention. Demonstrate that oxygen and water are necessary for rusting.

Describe Rusting + List Prevention Methods Rusting is a chemical process that changes iron into iron oxide. Rusting can be prevented by: Painting Oiling Galvanising (coating in zinc)

Demonstrate that Oxygen and Water are Necessary for Rusting Set up three test tubes with iron nails. Add water to one test tube. Add boiled, cooled water and a layer of oil to another test tube. Add cotton wool and some calcium chloride to the third test tube. Leave the nails for a week. Only the nails in the test tube with water rusted.
