Purpose Commemorate dead loved ones Mix of Spanish Catholic and Aztec beliefs *Very important, mostly Mexican tradition *Commemorates dead and is opportunity to family to gather together to do so. ~From influences of Catholic Spaniards (All Saints and All Souls Days) and precolumbian-aztec practices, beliefs “The intent is to encourage visits by the souls, so that the souls will hear the prayers and the comments of the living directed to them. Celebrations can take a humorous tone, as celebrants remember funny events and anecdotes about the departed.[3]” Pic http://www.lapetitegardenia.com/blog/the-history-of-dia-de-los-muertos.html http://www.christianlatino.com/2010_11_01_archive.html

This custom is similar to that of Halloween's trick-or-treating and is relatively recent Pics http://www.lapetitegardenia.com/blog/the-history-of-dia-de-los-muertos.html http://www.casalatina.com/mole-tamales-and-dia-de-los-muertos/ http://www.cristinaacosta.com/blog/2009/10/the-colors-of-dia-de-los-muertos-the-day-of-the-dead/ http://kymri.photoshelter.com/image/I0000K297eKCcjHU
