How are you feeling today? Mood in Literature How are you feeling today?

Mood Defined Mood is a feeling that a writer creates for readers. We have talked about mood as the overall atmosphere of a work. What kind of mood does this gloomy weather give you?

Ways to find the mood. An author’s word choice will help you determine the overall mood of a story. Imagery is a tool that writers use to convey mood. Imagery is words and phrases that appeal to a reader’s senses of sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste.

Finding Mood For the following slides, write the mood the narrative creates using the words from the handout.

Narrative 1 Bouncing into the room, she lit up the vicinity with a joyous glow on her face as she told about her fiancé and their wedding plans.

Narrative 2 She huddled in the corner, clutching her tattered blanket and shaking convulsively, as she feverishly searched the room for the unknown dangers that awaited her.

Narrative 3 The laughing wind skipped through the village, teasing trees until they danced with anger and cajoling the grass into fighting itself, blade slapping blade, as the silly dog with golf ball eyes and flopping, slobbery tongue bounded across the lawn.

Videos for Mood For the following slides, identify the mood of each video.
