Aim: How is physical evidence packaged Aim: How is physical evidence packaged? Do Now: Which search pattern requires more than one investigator?

Collecting and Packaging Physical Evidence Physical evidence must be handled and processed in a way that prevents any change from taking place between the time it is removed from the crime scene and the time it is received by the crime laboratory.

Evidence label requires where, when, how, who and chain of custody signatures.

1. Each different item must be placed in separate containers. c02L04 Process: 1. Each different item must be placed in separate containers. Packaging evidence separately prevents damage and cross contamination. Ordinary mailing envelopes should not be used as evidence containers because powders and fine particles will leak out of their corners.

In these instances use: - wrapping paper - manila envelopes or c02L04 If bloodstained materials are stored in airtight containers, the accumulation of moisture may encourage the growth of mold, which can destroy the evidential value of blood. In these instances use: - wrapping paper - manila envelopes or - paper bags

II. Maintaining Chain of Custody Continuity of possession, or the chain of custody, must be established whenever evidence is presented in court as an exhibit. This means that every person who handled or examined the evidence must be accounted for. A minimum record would show the collector’s initials, location of the evidence, and date of collection.

All of the individuals involved in the collection, handling and transportation of the evidence may be requested to testify in court.

Summary: Describe the steps and importance of packaging evidence.
