OBJECTIVES Enhance Driver Awareness Change negative driving habits through positive coaching Reduction in vehicle accidents

Program BASIS Our Program is included with our Defensive Driving Policy Defensive Driving Policy Components Plan and organize each and every driving trip Journey Management Prior to getting into the vehicle Pre-Trips Prior to starting the engine After starting the engine When driving the vehicle Defensive Driving After driving the vehicle Post Trip Accident/Incident Notification

Components continued Plan and organize each and every driving trip Prepare a Journey Management Plan if required by SKTPB Policy. • Determine and prepare for the route you will take and the weather conditions expected along the route. • Think through the trip to make sure you are prepared for every contingency. • Make sure you are well-rested for the trip you will take.

Components continued Prior to getting into the vehicle • Be satisfied that the vehicle and or trailer is in safe operating condition. • If Applicable, ensure that the load is secure and that the vehicle is of the correct size and designed for its intended use • Conduct a vehicle inspection while conducting the “360 walk Around”. • Review the last driver vehicle inspection report (49 CFR 396) • Sign the report, only if defects or deficiencies were noted by the driver who prepared the report, to acknowledge that the driver has reviewed it and that there is a certification that the required repairs have been performed

Components continued Prior to starting the engine • Ensure that all required documents are located in the vehicle/trailer. • Check around the vehicle to make sure nothing is under it or behind it. • Check/adjust the mirrors and seat. • Fasten your seat belts and ensure that your passenger(s) does (if applicable) After starting the engine • Notice the overall running condition of the vehicle. • Check the engine temperature. • Check the lights. • Check around the vehicle to make sure there are no oncoming vehicles. • Prepare to drive defensively.

Driving Component Components continued • Obey all posted speed limits and all other posted traffic signs. • Non-employee passengers are not allowed in commercial vehicles. • Do not make calls or answer a mobile phone or pager, send or receive a text message, or use a hands-free mobile phone device while driving a vehicle. • Don’t drive if you are tired; pull over and rest. • Don’t drive when you are angry, worried or frustrated, or become angry or frustrated. • Don’t drive when your mind is not on your driving. • Don’t drive if the road conditions are unfavorable. • Don’t drive if the weather conditions are too adverse. • Don’t drive with bright lights while facing on-coming vehicles or following vehicles. • Don’t run caution or red lights or stop signs. • Don’t pass another vehicle unless safe and in a passing zone.

Driving Component (continued) Components continued Driving Component (continued) • Don’t weave in and out of your lane. • Always signal when changing lanes or turning. • Always be aware of the other drivers/vehicles. • Always drive on your side of the roadway. • Always maintain a safe distance between your vehicle and other vehicles (one car length for every ten miles of speed; double the distance in bad weather). • Always yield the right-of-way. • Always treat an out-of-service traffic light as a four-way stop. • Always be prepared to take defensive actions to avoid a collision or to avoid running into someone or something. • Always focus on your job of driving defensively. Always lock and secure your vehicle when unattended..

Vehicle Operations Looks far enough ahead of vehicle while driving Adjusts visual distance based upon speed Evaluates short and distant objects Obeys all posted traffic signs Allows for proper following distance Adjusts speed based on driving conditions Scans all intersections before entering and crossing Checks all mirrors at regular intervals (7-8 seconds) Keeps eyes moving Clears rear and sides of vehicle while stopping Looks into and around corners and turns Properly uses turn indicators Applies brakes economically Does not allow for distractions while driving Utilizes spotter for backing
