John’s personal testimony about Jesus Christ! John 1:1-4 1:3 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ. 1 John 1:3 (NIV84) 2

Our sermon series for the 2015-2016 school year The Study of John’s Letters

John younger brother of James a fishing family partner with Peter and Andrew student of John the Baptist

The turning point in Peter, Andrew, James and John’s lives, was not only the astonishing catch of fish, but being in the presence of someone very, very holy.

As Jesus and the Holy Spirit spent time with John, he began to grow up!

Peter, James and John observed the miracle of Jesus being transfigured.

John found that Jesus was no longer in the tomb.

John learned that Jesus was alive and would have more personal time with Him.

Jesus was no ordinary Man Jesus was no ordinary Man. He was the Lord, the King of the universe, God in human flesh.

John becomes for us an exceptionally well-qualified eye witness.

John’s relationship with Jesus didn’t end with His ascension into heaven.

Jesus’ continuing relationship with His disciples after His ascension. John 14:16-17 (NIV84) 16 And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counselor to be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you know Him, for He lives with you and will be in you.

Jesus’ continuing relationship with His disciples after His ascension. John 14:25-26 (NIV84) 25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

Jesus’ continuing relationship with His disciples after His ascension. John 15:26 (NIV84) 26 “When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, He will testify about Me.

Jesus’ continuing relationship with His disciples after His ascension. John 16:7 (NIV84) 7 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.

Jesus’ continuing relationship with His disciples after His ascension. John 16:12-15 (NIV84) 12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13 But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on His own; He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will bring glory to Me by taking from what is Mine and making it known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is Mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is Mine and make it known to you.

The lack of the physical presence of Jesus did not stop nor hinder their relationship with Jesus. 18

John’s audience the Christian community as a whole surrounding the city of Ephesus

Prologue (1:1–4) “We proclaim a message that you might have fellowship with us.” The message: Jesus Christ has appeared as our Eternal Life. (Christ is Life) (1:1-4; 5:20) 1 John 1:1–4 (NIV84) [cf. John 1:1-18; 1 John 5:20] 1:1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. 1:2 The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us.

1 John 1:1-4 (NIV84) 1:1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. 1:2 The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. 1:3 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ. 1:4 We write this to make our (your) joy complete.

concerning the Word of life. … that which was from the beginning … which we have heard … which we have seen with our eyes … which we have looked at … (which) our hands have touched 1:1 We proclaim concerning the Word of life.

“the Word of life was physically and tangibly present with us! John’s testimony “the Word of life was physically and tangibly present with us! 23

Why does John speak of Jesus as the Word of life? John 1:1-5 & 14 (NIV84) 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In Him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it. 14 The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

“in the beginning” … means the pre-existence of Jesus as God’s Son before the creation of the universe. means Jesus is “the Word.” 25

“in the beginning” … “And God said.” means Genesis 1:1 (NIV84) 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. “And God said.” By Him speaking things came into existence. By His Word living things were created. 26

Three Proclamations in John’s Prologue : Jesus is the eternal life! 1. (v.1) Jesus is the Word of life! 2. (v.2) Jesus is the eternal life! 1:2 The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. Two “in the beginning”s #1. at the creation #2. the beginning of the New Covenant with God through His Son 28

Three Proclamations in John’s Prologue: 1. (v.1) Jesus is the Word of life! 2. (v.2) Jesus is the eternal life! 3. (v.3) So that you may have fellowship with us! A purpose clause = “in order that” or “so that” 1:3 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ. 29

John’s purpose for proclaiming what he had seen and heard is to expand the fellowship to include you and me. 30

1 John 1:4 (NIV84) 1:4 We write this to make our joy complete. 1 John 1:4 1:4 We write this to make your joy complete. 1 John 1:4 (The Message) 4 …: We want you to enjoy this, too. Your joy will double our joy!

A primary factor of our fellowship together with the Father and His Son is joy, joy for all who are in that fellowship. 32

The opening to John’s first letter #1. A joyful fellowship is attractive! Sounds to me like John is going to be helping us realize that joy if will follow his instructions in his letter. 33

The opening to John’s first letter #2. Having fellowship with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ! 1. What does that look like? 2. What am I to do to fully enter into that fellowship with the Father and His Son? 34

Christ’s Spirit lives within us We are actually better off that we have the Spirit of Christ rather than the physical Christ Christ’s Spirit lives within us Christ’s Spirit uses the Bible to teach us the truth about God and about ourselves

The combination of the Word of God, the Spirit of God and the fellowship of those who are humbly surrendering to Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, is, I believe, exactly the fellowship that John is inviting us into in his first letter.

1. What does this fellowship that John is speaking of look like. 2 1. What does this fellowship that John is speaking of look like? 2. What am I to do to fully enter into this fellowship? Investigate First John for clues as to what it looks like for each of us personally to be having fellowship with the Father and with His Son. 37

A Seahawk Illustration #1. How is our “fellowship with the Seahawks” something we proclaim to others for the purpose of bringing them into our fellowship so that they would join us so that we would all have our joy filled up in the Seahawks? 38

A Seahawk Illustration #2. What does that fellowship with the Seahawks look like in the context of our physical presence and in our speech? 39

A Seahawk Illustration #3. What is the source of the words we use in speaking when we are having fellowship together with the Seahawks? 40

Conversation during lunch … Look for what may help us experience more fellowship together around Jesus Christ and His Father. 41
