Teaching Online in the Spring … voices of experience Instructional Design & Digital Learning, a unit of the Teaching Transformation & Development Academy

First Things to Think About Start with the basics of pedagogy, how people learn Design and teach courses so students can achieve the outcomes of the course, do the work Whether on-ground, online, blended or hybrid, it is about teaching and learning “It’s not about technology, it’s about learning.” – Stephen Anspacher

What is so Different About Online? Challenges Benefits What should I know?

Ten Best Practices Develop a set of explicit expectations Be present in the course site Create a supportive online course community Include group & individual activities Use synchronous & asynchronous activities Informal feedback early and often Discussions that invite questions & reflection Use digital content, resources Combine core concepts with personalized learning Include good closing and wrap activities for the course Boettcher, J. & Conrad, R. (2016). The Online Teaching Survival Guide, 2nd Ed. Jossey-Bass.

1. Develop a set of explicit expectations Ideas: Detailed instructions – course schedule & syllabus Instructional repetition Assignment descriptions Lesson overviews Virginia Clinton Be very clear …

2. Be present in the course site Ideas: Social Presence Virtual office hours Welcome video Lesson overview video (Tegrity/VoiceThread) Weekly Announcements Joel Pugh Meet students from everywhere

3. Create a supportive online course community Studies have shown that online students not only want to get to know you, their instructor, but also their fellow students.  A "getting acquainted" activity is an opportunity for students to tell a story or share something about themselves.   Judith V. Boettcher & Rita-Marie Conrad (2010) provide some great examples in The Online Teaching Survival Guide  For our "getting acquainted" activity we would like you to include your name, what you teach, a photo and two facts about you that are true and one that is a lie. After you have completed your post, please respond to the other participants and try to guess their lie. Directions on how to add the photo can be found in the "Resources “How To Videos" area.

4. Include group & individual activities Ideas: Active learning strategies Peer to peer learning Groups –large & small groups Journals Birgit Hans Don’t have too many assignments

5. Use synchronous & asynchronous activities Suggestions/Tips/Ideas: Active Learning strategies Web-conference: ~ Zoom ~ Bb Collaborate Ultra ~ Voice thread Individual research with presentation: ~ Narrated PowerPoint Virginia Clinton Add in some synchronous communication

6. Informal feedback early and often Suggestions/Tips/Ideas: Qualtrics survey Pretest & post test - Bb Muddiest point, reflection quiz, KWL Fred Remer Students need feedback, frequent feedback

7. Discussions that invite questions & reflection Provide a rubric Share examples Don’t ask for facts Peer leadership Encourage critical thinking Create open-ended questions What do you think? Why? What if? Ideas: Weekly discussion leaders Video recording synopsis at end of week

8. Use digital content, resources Ideas: Open Education Resources Tegrity MERLOT Khan Academy YouTube Hoonuit (Atomic Learning) Fred Remer YouTube Channel

9. Combine core concepts with personalized learning Ideas: Wikis, journals, discussions Research project for authentic assignments Fred Remer Some need more interaction

10. Include good closing & wrap-up activities for the course “To Do” list reminder Announcements Project sharing What did we learn? How have we changed? Ideas: Final presentations/projects Survey Portfolio

Other Thoughts Positive experience Time management Don’t be afraid
