Lijjat Papad From 7 women to 43,000 spanning several states in India.

Lijjat earns a name in 1962 To set up their cooperative it was finally suggested to these ladies that they name their organization. They held a contest and even advertised in the papers. The winner came up with Lijjat, which means Tasty. The winner was awarded 5 rupees for their efforts. In 1966, Lijjat was recognized as a village industry and exempted from tax.

Lijjat profits soar: 1959 to 2012 As of January 20, 2012, Rs 1 Crore in U.S. dollars is worth $214,431.36. Currently, Lijjat Papad has 79 branches, 27 Divisions and offers self-employment to about 43,000 members all over India with a sales turnover of Rs 829 crores (including Rs 36 crores of export). Lijjat believed that every woman who worked for the collective was an owner and would share the profits or the losses. As bonuses, the women had the option to choose between gold or a house (priced at Rs 20,000, next to the chawl). The unshakeable Indian belief in gold made the women opt for the shiny metal over property.
