T.E.A.M.W.O.R.K “Never Doubt That A Group Of Thoughtful, Committed People Can Change The World. Indeed, It is the Only Thing That Ever Has.”

Contents A robust portfolio of current standards and PARs Awards and other forms of recognition available to working groups New and efficient ways to conduct meetings Explaining the benefits of IEEE standards Some things the SA does for CS working groups

CS Standards Development Efforts 44 New PARs Approved in 2006 16 New Standards Approved in 2006 For a Total of: 91 Current PARs 218 Current Standards

Working Group Recognition: Part I The IEEE-SA Working Group Chair Award is presented to IEEE Standards Working Group chairs, Co-Chairs, or Special Editors, etc., for their contributions to the development and publication of a standard. The award consists of a laminated wooden plaque displaying the cover of the standard and the name of the person. Note: Other forms of recognition include certificates of appreciation available to working group members (at the request of the chair).

Working Group Recognition: Part II In addition, once the standard is published, Working Group members are offered a complimentary copy of the standard with their names appearing in the front matter.

New Ways to Conduct Meetings: IEEE’s Web Conferencing Service This service is offered in partnership with Microsoft Live Meeting, Inc. to all IEEE employees and volunteers for conducting IEEE-related business. IEEE’s Real-time Web Conferencing collaboration lets you: Stream video Listen online View dynamic PowerPoint presentations Share desktop applications Conduct online Q & A Conduct formal and informal polling Record your meetings For more info on Web Conferencing go to: http://www.ieee.org/portal/cms_docs/web/webconf/fees2007.pdf

Benefits of IEEE-SA Standards Standards are tools of commerce Companies actively participating have a head start on their competitors in adapting to market demands Research risks and development costs are reduced for companies contributing to the standardization process Participation enables companies to anticipate technology standardization, facilitating the progress of product development and technology Leaders in technology should become more involved in standards Standards are a positive stimulus for innovation Standards are internationally respected For more info on these benefits, please visit: http://www.thinkieeestandards.net/benefits.html http://standards.ieee.org/sa-mem/why_std.html The 1991 Annual Report of the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) may have stated it best. “Standards are a vehicle of communication for producers and users. They serve as a common language, defining quality and establishing safety criteria. Costs are lower if procedures are standardized. Training is simplified. And consumers accept products more readily when they can be judged on intrinsic merit.”

IEEE Standards Association and its Relationship with The IEEE Computer Society Project Approval &Project Management Electronic Resources Develop Draft Standards Ballot Draft IEEE-SA Standards Board Approval Publish Standard Other Resources An overview of the standards process will be discussed in this module. I will review the process of project approval on through to publication of the standard. I’ll also provide information on related programs and resources.

Project Management: Standards Committees Assigned to a Program Manager PM-Provides support with standardization efforts: Serves as a bridge to the IEEE-SA and its standing boards Answers questions about procedures and along with chair, ensures that procedures are followed Keeps you informed New products New services Policy changes Brings your ideas and concerns to the Standards Board and its committees PM is the partner for your standardization efforts. See your staff liaison for guidance on the process. Their job is to • answer your questions on procedures and • ensure that the procedures are followed • find out about policy changes and new services and products The liaison can also serve as a representative for you and bring your ideas and concerns to the Standards Board.

Project Management: Each Project Gets Help During Document Development Works with the working group technical editor to ensure proper draft development Offers Mandatory Editorial Coordination Provides support through the draft development process Enables efficient pre-approval editing and swift post-approval publication Supplies style templates/electronic text and figures for revisions. Your IEEE Standards Staff Liaison is your main point of contact for standards-related information. Your Staff Liaison keeps you informed about IEEE Standards policy changes, assists you in the stages of the IEEE standards-development process, and advises you to help avoid pitfalls in this process. Each of these items will be discussed in this presentation.

Examples: PAR form and working guide; documentation like Bylaws, Operations Manual, and Companion; FAQs; and status reports. Electronic files for revision of approved standards can usually be made available. Any staff member can be accessed by e-mail.
