Presentation transcript:

“In our discussions, time and time again, we faced a fundamental conflict – between market-driven efficiency that encourages maximum consumption of resources with the least possible effort in the shortest time, and society’s responsibility to provide future generations with the same benefits that we enjoy today. We believe that until the roots of this conflict are addressed and the economic rules changed so that markets reward long-term sustainability and recognize the value of well-functioning natural systems, existing market forces will continue to encourage shorter-term exploitation instead of long-term conservation of the Northern Forest.” Northern Forest Lands Council, 1994

EXEMPLARY FORESTRY FUND ATTRACT PRIVATE INVESTMENT CAPITAL TO PURCHASE TIMBERLANDS THAT: WOULD BE HELD FOR THE LONG-TERM, WHICH WE DEFINED AS AT LEAST 60 YEARS WOULD BE MANAGED IN AN EXEMPLARY MANNER

Investment Thesis Marry philanthropy and private capital investment together. Raise philanthropic dollars to purchase exemplary forestry easements assuring that lands will be managed to a high standard. Revenue received from the sale of the exemplary forestry easements will be used to compensate investors for restoring the forest over time until it can produce substantial ongoing revenue from the harvesting of high quality forest products. Expectation is that this investment approach will be of interest to individuals, foundations and institutions for that portion of their portfolio dedicated to longer term investments (possibly intergenerational) and/or a commitment to Mountains of the Dawn and/or exemplary forestry.

Other potential supplemental strategies: Carbon credits and other payments for ecological services Utilization of New Market Tax Credits and other low-cost financing or tax preferential programs Acquisition of timber rights on land trust lands Long-held family lands could be traded in for shares of exemplary forestry fund
