Investigation 3.1 Discover what types of objects are magnetic. Items in the plastic dish: Golf Tee Pipe Cleaner Paper clip Brad Rubber Band Nail Wire Mesh Aluminum Foil Small Silver Washer Silver “pipe” Copper Wire Black Twist Tie Brass Washer Paper Clip Pred. Reason How React. Brad

Investigation 3.1 Discussion Questions Did you detect any patterns in your data? Did the force of the magnet appear to be stronger with some items and not others? What could make the force of the magnet even stronger? What made the force of the magnet weaker?

Magnetic Fields Reading What is a magnetic force (magnetism)? Draw a diagram that shows magnetic force. Where is the force of a magnet strongest? What are these areas called? What happens when you bring the north poles of two magnets together? What happens when you bring the north pole of one magnet close to the south pole of another magnet? Suppose you have two magnets that have no markings on them. You bring the end of one close to the end o the other, and you feel the ends push apart. What can you conclude about the poles of magnets? If an object were in motion, how might you use a magnet to change the direction of its motion? Read pgs. 34-35 and answer the following questions in your packet. Label the pg. MAGNETIC FIELDS READING

Investigation 3.2 Objective: Procedure: How can you increase or decrease a magnets magnetic force? (Write this into your notebooks) Start by setting up the two cups with the craft stick stretching across. Put one magnet on top of the craft stick. Connect the paper clip (magnetically) below the craft stick. Carefully, add washers to the paperclip until the paperclip falls off. Record the number of washers that remained on the paperclip. Add another magnet to the top and repeat steps 4 & 5 for all four magnets. Procedure:

Investigation 3.1 Variables: Independent Variable: Dependent Variable: Controlled Variables: The number of MAGNETS Purposely Changed The number of WASHERS Changes in response Cups, craft stick, size of washers, mass of washers, size of magnets

Investigation 3.2

Investigation 3.2 – Graphing Washers # of Magnets

Investigation 3.2 Discussion Questions What variable did we change in this experiment? Did you notice any trends or patterns in the your data? If so, explain using the graph. Based on your data, what can you conclude about a factor that increases or decrease the strength of a magnet? Did this experiment provide a fair test? Why or why not?

Investigation 3.3 Objective: Procedure: How does the distance from a magnet affect the force of its magnetic force? (Write this into your notebooks) Start by marking out the distances that are listed in the table. Put the magnets where it is specified. Put the paper clip at the furthest distance and work your way closer Record your observations in the table. Procedure:

Investigation 3.3 Data Collection Distance Observations 15 cm Did the paperclip attract to the magnet? YES OR NO 12.5 cm 10 cm 7.5 cm 5 cm 2.5 cm

Investigation 3.3 Discussion Questions How does distance from a magnet affect the force of its magnetic field? Include date from your investigation to back up your conclusion.
