The Eliminate Project Fundraising campaign

A Second Opportunity to Change History The Kiwanis and UNICEF partnership presents a second opportunity to change history!

Iodine Deficiency Disorders IDD In 1994, Kiwanis began a partnership with UNICEF and leveraged and raised nearly US$100 million These funds are now at work in more than 103 nations 80 million children in the developing world will be born free of IDD this year Hailed as one of the greatest public health triumphs of the 20th century

Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus (MNT) Kills nearly 60,000 newborn children and a significant number of mothers every year Kills one baby every nine minutes Targets the poorest, most underserved women and children on Earth

Leading Causes of MNT Deaths Lack of or limited access to immunization and prenatal care services Limited or absent clean delivery services Improper postpartum cord care The fatality rate can be as high as 100 percent in underserved areas

Serving the Children of the World Why Kiwanis? MNT is a heart-wrenching, preventable tragedy There is a proven action plan and the results are measurable MNT has already been eliminated in 20 countries More attention is needed to achieve the goal of MNT; Kiwanis has joined a select group of leading organizations and global health organizations on this issue. Kiwanis will help provide the last needed push to eliminate MNT from the 38 countries where it remains a threat. Serving the Children of the World

Babies and Mothers are Dying but There is a Solution Prevented by a series of three vaccinations costing US$1.80 Once vaccinated, mothers will have immunity through child bearing years Immunity is passed on to babies Mothers and babies are dying, but there is a solution. • MNT is extremely preventable • Three doses of a 60-cent vaccination can protect mothers, who pass their immunity to their future children. • Three doses of TT will give protection of a minimum of five years against tetanus; it can even go up to 10 years. • Babies born to immunized mothers will have protection for the first two months of life. • Promoting clean birthing practices around the world • When women learn about maternal health and are vaccinated for tetanus, they become empowered to take control of their wellbeing and that of their children.

The Eliminate Project Fundraising campaign Our Greatest Endeavor Raise a minimum of US$110 million by 2015 Save or protect more than 61 million mothers and newborns Who Suffers From it? 38 39 countries remain at risk of MNT. Most newborns and mothers dying of tetanus are in North America (Haiti), Africa, Europe (Turkey) and Asia. In North America, MNT has not yet been eliminated in Haiti. They often live in remote areas with little access to healthcare. Those who die of tetanus are not dying just because of the disease. They are dying because they are the poorest people in the world with the least access to health services, and cannot receive treatment. MNT sufferers are not served by anyone because they are too remote, too poor, and too invisible to the world. Countries Affected as of June 2011: Afghanistan Angola Burkina Faso Cambodia Cameroon Central African Republic Chad China Cote d'Ivoire Democratic Republic of the Congo Equatorial Guinea Ethiopia Gabon Ghana Guinea Bissau Haiti India Indonesia Iraq Kenya Lao People’s Democratic Republic Liberia Madagascar Mali Mauritania Niger Nigeria Pakistan Papua New Guinea Philippines Senegal Sierra Leone Somalia Sudan North / Sudan South United Republic of Tanzania Timor Leste Yemen

How Will We Do It? Engage every member of the Kiwanis family at every level Recruit and train more than 9,000 leaders Focus on human impact Inaugurate the campaign at the 96th Annual Kiwanis International Convention in Geneva Celebrate success in conjunction with Kiwanis International's 100th anniversary
