Aseptic Technique Definitions

What is Aseptic Technique? Procedures that are carried out during preparation of a sterile product in order to minimize contamination.

Contamination by personnel Note: The person compounding is the most frequent cause of contamination followed by contaminated equipment and contaminated raw material.

Environment Contamination Required control of an environment Laminar Flow Hood: Designed to reduce the risk of airborne contamination during the preparation of sterile products. This also provides a constant flow of air which is filtered. Vertical Horizontal

Laminar Flow Hoods Airflow: Pre-Filter: This removes large particles like dust and lint. High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) Filter: Remove 99.97% of particles and airborne microorganisms 0.3 microns or larger. These must be replaced on a regular basis to sustain the environment. Maintenance: Require inspection and certification every 6 months.

Horizontal Flow Hood The air flows across the work area towards you.

Vertical Flow Hood Air flows vertically, downward on the surface of the work area. Used in the preparation of antineoplastic and other potentially hazardous products. Some of the air is recirculated and filtered again, the remainder is vented to the outside. This is safer for the preparer as the air isn’t blowing directly at them.
