Parts of a Narrative Conflict: the problem in a story which triggers the action Setting: time, location, and other details about where a story takes place Point of View: who is telling the story Characterization: information given about characters through physical description, their actions, speech, or thoughts Plot: all the events in a story

Parts of a Narrative Plot structure: Introduction – background information to begin story rising action – central part of a story during which various problems arise climax – the high point of the story, where a conclusion of the events create the peak of the conflict falling action – follows the climax; the part of the story that shows the result of the climax and its effects on the characters, setting, and events to come resolution – conflicts are resolved; often serves as the conclusion of the story

Dialogue Conversation between two or more people Brings characters to life and adds interest Adds excitement, interest, and dramatic elements Provides information Creates suspense or conflict Reveals a character’s thoughts **use natural patterns of speech

Dialogue Tags Purpose: Tell the reader who is speaking or the source of the quotation Show the read actions related to the comments Most common dialogue tag is said

Dialogue Tags Other options are: asked explained shouted whispered cried admitted agreed mumbled shouted demanded warned pleaded answered snarled sobbed hissed

Punctuating Dialogue 1. Use a comma between the dialogue and the tag line (the word used to identify the speaker: “he said/she said”): “I would like to go to the beach this weekend,” she said. 2. Periods and commas go inside the quotation marks, as do question marks, exclamation marks or semicolons if they are directly related to the material within the quotes “Where did all the magazines go?” asked Sarah.

Punctuating Dialogue 3. When a dialogue tag interrupts a sentence, it should be set off by commas. “That is,” Adam said, “the best chocolate cake I have ever tasted.” 4. To use a quote inside a quotation, use single quotes. 5. When you are writing in paragraphs, using a quote requires starting a new paragraph.

Example: I was walking to school today when I saw my friend Kate Example: I was walking to school today when I saw my friend Kate. She was carrying a large cardboard box and was dragging her book bag. I decided to ask her if she needed help. “Kate, want some help with your bag?” I asked. “That would be such a big help,” she responded.
