Agenda Sharing Minilecture on Power and the History of English Language Small Group Discussion Break Guided Discussion District/School Analysis Discussion Next Week

Sharing 1 thing you continue to think about/question or 1 challenge you’ve overcome this semester

Minilecture History of the English Language “Standard” English (LWC) as we know it is the result of invasion, struggle, assimilation, and technology. What counts as “standard” or “proper” English is determined by the winners in historical struggles and who had control of technologies. AAVE/Ebonics too has a history: invasion/subjugation, struggle, cultural pride All forms of language are cultural identifiers.

SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION Ashley M. Alyssa Rachel Jennifer J. Group 2 Abbie Meghan Lauren Justine Group 3 Jessie S. Kathryn Kit Ashley F. Group 4 Kalina Jessica M. Laura J. Melissa Group 5 Julie Amanda Emily Jeff Group 6 Laura C. Chelsea Cassie Kimberly

Group Task Create the rough outline of a professional development your group could deliver to a group of colleagues about today’s topic. Identify the specifics of what you would want them to learn. Identify what you want them to do with this knowledge. Identify SPECIFIC changes YOU will make to YOUR practice based on this knowledge.

Break 15 minutes

Features of AAE Podcast by Sarah Jones Features of AAE 3 things you learned 1 thing that surprised you 1 thing that affects your understanding of your students or the world

Guided Discussion Question Why are speakers of AAE more apt to be placed in special education?

Guided Discussion Question Given the values of communities of color as expressed through community cultural capital as well as AAE, how should we structure classrooms to build on that what students bring to the classroom? What should the classroom environment look like? How should students be assessed? How should curriculum be designed? How should instruction be delivered?

Community/School Analysis In groups of 6 (your choice) share your community/school analysis. What did you learn? How will you apply this learning to your teaching?

Classroom Analysis Due on 3/10 Review requirements Exemplar available on course wiki Questions?
