TELEVISION The founder of the British television was John Reith. In 1927 he became the first Director of the British Broadcasting Corporation.
THE ROLE OF TELEVISION Watching TV is the most popular leisure activity in Britain – on average, the British watch over 26 hours of television each week. More than 99% of the population have television sets and more than half of all households have two or more TV sets.
A large number of programs shown on television is made in the UK, although there is a significant number of American TV series. A lot of programs are from Australia, New Zealand and Canadian. Programs are mainly in the English language.
The choice of programs available to the ordinary British viewers is quite significant, but the programs also differ in quality.
The most popular channel on British TV is BBC 1 The most popular channel on British TV is BBC 1. Most people in Britain watch ITV and BBC 1. Some British people prefer Channel 4 or BBC 2, others like cable and satellite TV.
About 5% of British people watch most of the TV programmes regularly.
