Timeline/Other Facts Jacques was born in 1491 in Saint-Malo, France In 1534, Cartier’s first expedition was to discover a western passage to the wealthy markets of Asia. In 1535, Cartier sailed his second voyage reaching the St. Lawrence river that he thought was the Northwestern passage to Asia In 1541, Cartier sailed to Newfoundland, Canada to establish a permanent city. In 1542, he returned to France which was his last voyage He died in 1557 in Saint-Malo, France at age 65

Personal backround Cartier was French. He loved to sail and was an experienced navigator and explorer. He married Mary Catherine des Granches, the daughter of a famous family. He died in France and is buried at St. Vincent's Cathedral there.

Motives Cartier travelled to discover new lands in the world Cartier wanted to find the Northwest passage to sail to China and find riches in Asia. On his third voyage, Cartier wanted to find the "Kingdom of Saguenay" and its riches and to claim land along the St. Lawrence River in Canada.

Route of Exploration Cartier started his expedition in 1534 from France. His second expedition in 1535 was to the St. Lawrence River to find the Northwestern Passage to Asia His last expedition was in 1541 to Newfoundland, Canada. He returned to France for good in 1542.

Impact Cartier gave Canada its first name "Kanata" meaning village Cartier was first to explore Newfoundland, and claimed the land for France. Cartier found and mapped the St. Lawrence river.

Sponsor King Francis, the King of France, heard that Cartier was a navigator. He wanted to send Cartier to find the Northwestern passage and new lands. Sponsor
