Before Islam arrived The people of Arabia known as Arabs believed in many gods.

Founder of Islam Muhammad

When 610 ad

Details about Muhammed -was an Arab merchant from Mecca in Arabia. -Became very interested in religion. -He had contact with Jews and Christians.

Muhammad’s Vision At the age of 40, while meditating in a cave outside of Mecca, the Angel Gabriel spoke to him, and told him he was to be a messenger of God.

Holy book Qur’an written in Arabic, So the language Spread with Islam

Muhammad tries to spread his word -First in Mecca, but fails. He is forced to leave, his life was threatened! -Goes to Medina, and is successful, gains many followers.

What did Muhammad eventually do? He returned to Mecca with his “army” of followers, and was successful spreading Islam there in 630 AD.

632 ad Muhammad dies, but Islam had spread Across Arabia.

The Five Pillars of Islam 1. State the Creed: There is No God but Allah, and Muhammad is his messenger.

2. Must Pray 5 times a day, facing Mecca.

3. Alms giving: Must Give to charity.

4. Must fast from sun up to sun down during the holy month of Ramadan

5. The Hajj: Muslims must go on the pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in their their life.

Split within Islam -Issue: Who could be The Successor to the Prophet Muhammad? Sunni Muslims (83%) Shi’a (Shi’ite) Muslims (16%) They have often fought!

Similarities with Judaism & Christianity -one god -Believe in some of the same ProPhets

Key difference of God. Jews & Christians DO NOT believe Muhammad was a Muslims believe Muhammad was the last great Prophet of God. Jews & Christians DO NOT believe Muhammad was a Prophet.
