Aim Success Criteria I can design an Anglo-Saxon village I can plan an Anglo-Saxon village. I can make a model. I can discuss the different features of the village.

Can you remember the different parts of the village? Where did they find water? How did they build their homes? What did the village look like? How can we make our own village? What material could we use?

In the Village The Anglo-Saxons built their villages near a water source, such as a river or lake, which would give them drinking water and fish to eat. The chief of the village lived in a larger house in the centre of the village. This house was also a meeting hall. Fields for growing crops were ploughed over to prepare them for planting. Oxen would pull a basic plough which was called an ard. Animals were kept in the village. Children would often be responsible for looking out for wolves. Pots made from clay were fired (dried out and hardened) on a large open fire. Families lived in smaller village houses. Some buildings were used as a space for performing a craft like weaving or as storage units.

We are going to make our own model village.

Step 1: Choose your land Choose a big piece of cardboard for your land. Using coloured paper or colouring pencils, make a lake or river.
