A Biblical Study from the book Steps to Christ Chapter 5 Consecration

Definition of Consecration: To keep oneself apart or separate; cause himself to be hallowed (of God); to be observed as holy; to consecrate oneself.

I. The Call to Consecration Chapter 5 CONSECRATION I. The Call to Consecration Read Isaiah 1:5-6; Ephesians 2:1; 2 Timothy 2:26 Discussion Questions: 1. Discuss a man’s natural condition as described in the above texts. 2. What do you think it means, “taken captive by him at his will”? 3. How do you see consecration as an essential component of the Christian life?

II. The Price of Consecration  Read Deuteronomy 11:13; Joshua 22:5; Matthew 7:21; 2 Timothy 2:9 Discussion Questions: 4. From the texts you just read, what would you tell someone is the price of consecration? 5. Explain why this would be necessary. 6. What do you think it means, “But he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven”?

III. Chosen by God for Consecration Read Psalm 4:3; Ephesians 1:4; 1 Peter 2:9 Discussion Questions: 7. How do the texts above complement the texts read in the section, “The Call to Consecration”? 8. What do you think it means to be chosen by God? 9. What do you think it means when it refers to “a peculiar people”?

IV. Reward for Consecration  Read Matthew 5:12; Matthew 19:27-29 Discussion Questions: 10. How do you think the question Peter asked is similar to the one some of us ask today? 11. What are some of the things that some contemporary ministers promise to those who would be followers of Jesus? 12. How would you explain to someone who read this text what it means to forsake houses and family for Jesus’ sake? 13. When Jesus spoke of receiving a reward, what was He talking about?

V. Consecration Tested  Read Matthew 19:16-24 Discussion Questions: 14. How do you think the saying, “have your cake and eat it, too”, applies to the rich young ruler? 15. The young man said that he had kept the two great commandments. Was the young man right when he said that he had kept them? If your answer is No, explain why not. 16. What do you think Jesus meant when He said it would be difficult for a rich man to be saved? 17. What would you say to a rich man in the contemporary culture who asks the same question the young man asked Jesus?

VI. Our Part in Consecration Read 1 Chronicles 29:5; Isaiah 1:18; Jeremiah 29:13; Matthew 6:33 Discussion Questions: 18. After reading these texts, how would you explain to someone the part we play in consecration? 19. Discuss why this is necessary?

“Through the right exercise of the will, an entire change may be made in your life. By yielding up your will to Christ, you ally yourself with the power that is above all principalities and powers. You will have strength from above to hold you steadfast, and thus through constant surrender to God you will be enabled to live the new life, even the life of faith.” --Steps to Christ, p. 32
