ELECTION OF 1932 Republican – Herbert Hoover Democrat – Franklin Delano Roosevelt former NY state Senator – Asst. Sec. of Navy- NY Gov. Related to Pres. Grant, Zachary Taylor, T. Roosevelt and Brit. Prime Minister Winston Churchill Stricken with polio in 1921 – wife, Eleanor, will help him rehabilitate-get back into politics

NEW DEAL Promised “New Deal” (series of laws/ programs to pull out of the Depression) for Americans. Inaugural speech - “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself”. Relied on Brain Trust – advisors (lawyers, economists, social workers) to help develop relief programs – help nation recover Fireside chats – radio talks to Americans on what president/Congress will do

Hundred Days March 9 – June 16, 1933 – Series of programs/laws dealing with banking crisis and other conditions resulting from the Depression Banking Holiday - Ordered all banks closed for 4 days – sent out experts to examine banks Emergency Banking Relief Act (1933) reopen banks that are sound under supervision of Federal Reserve System – prohibit gold hoarding Federal Deposit Insurance Corp (FDIC) insure deposits up to $5000 – gov’t guaranteed money placed in banks would not be lost Americans began to trust and invest again.

RELIEF CCC- Civilian Conservation Corp (1933) -Environmental program put 2.2 million unmarried men (18-25) to work planting trees, building bridges, national parks -Workers earned $1 day – free board at camps -First recruits were Bonus Army members

Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA) FERA – Federal Emergency Relief Admin. (1933) -Headed by Harry Hopkins gave cash grants to state to give to needy/unemployed. Hopkins however, believed men should be put to work, not be given charity (dole)

RELIEF AAA- Agricultural Adjustment Admin . (1933) - Goal to raise farm prices quickly and control production to keep prices stable. Subsidy – grant of money (financial assistance) to farmers who reduced production Ex: Cotton, wheat, corn, rice, tobacco, dairy Later would plow under crops – kill livestock In 1936, US v Butler, Supreme Court will rule this law unconstitutional for invading reserved powers of the state.

RELIEF TVA-Tennessee Valley Authority (1933) Built dams along Tenn. River to provide electric power – helped control flooding, reclaim land, improve economic conditions. NIRA – National Industrial Recovery Act (1933) Help businesses regulate themselves Created: PWA- Public Works Admin – gave money for large public works programs (road construction, shipyards, hospitals, schools) – did not spend money quickly – did not provide lots of jobs for unemployed

RELIEF NRA- National Recovery Admin – set minimum wages – abolished child labor – set up codes of fair trade, quality standards, production levels, prices, maximum hours worked – could form unions – collective bargaining -Adopted a “blue eagle” as symbol- put in windows – people encouraged to buy from businesses showing eagle. Ruled unconstitutional by Sup. Court in 1935

REFORM LAWS Truth in Securities Act – eliminate fraud in the stock market – companies must register with Federal Trade Commission – give accurate information on corporation Securities and Exchange Commission – power to punish dishonest stockbrokers and speculators
