Before the earthquake: 地 震 前 的 预 兆 The water in the wells rose and fell. The well walls had deep cracks. A smelly gas came out. The chickens were too nervous to eat. Mice ran out of the fields. Fish jumped out of bowls and ponds. Bright lights could be seen in the sky. The sound of planes could be heard . The water pipes cracked and burst. People thought little of these events and went to bed as usual that night.

When happening: Steam burst from holes in the ground. At 3:42 am the greatest earthquake of the 20th century heard in Beijing One-third of the nation felt it. A huge crack cut across houses, roads and canals. Steam burst from holes in the ground. Hard hills of rock became rivers of dirt. In fifteen seconds …lay in ruins. Many children were left without parents. More than 400,000 people were killed or injured.

After the earthquake: *All hope was not lost. ※The army sent soldiers to help the rescue works. ※ organized teams to dig out…. ※ 10,000 miners were rescued from the coal mines. ※ workers built shelters for survivors ※ Fresh water was taken to the city by train,truck and plane. *All hope was not lost.
