“Why I picked this picture...” © Optimise Limited 2015

Our mission To develop a standard Carers Welcome Pack template bespoke in terms of service and locality © Optimise Limited 2015

Where we are now… Where we want to be… Why this matters Lots of different versions Some information difficult to keep up to date Different levels of information provided (varying from an information card to a complete pack) Where we want to be… A consistent approach to developing a Carers Welcome Pack – using bespoke information in terms of services and localities © Optimise Limited 2015

What our patients/families say… What the guidance says …. The evidence What our patients/families say… What the guidance says …. Carers want a pack of information they need to: - Understand the illness - Be aware of the likely consequences - Know what they can do to help - Know their rights - Know what other services and support is available locally for them and the person they care for ‘Rules’ of the ward ‘Child Visiting inpatient and residential units within the Trust’ Leaflet © Optimise Limited 2015

5 minutes quietly, individually to capture your own thoughts 2 simple questions 5 minutes quietly, individually to capture your own thoughts 20 minutes talking around your table Come up with your tables’ top ideas Share with the room © Optimise Limited 2015

Question 1 Hints “In the context of today and reflecting on your engagement with carers what do you think they would want/need in terms of information?” Think about our mission today Take 5 minutes to reflect individually and capture your thoughts Spend 20 minutes sharing your views, and come up with your tables’ TOP 3 ‘main points of information’ © Optimise Limited 2015

“What would a Carers Welcome Pack look like?” Question 2 Hints “What would a Carers Welcome Pack look like?” Be really specific eg format, contents, accessibility, etc Take 5 minutes to reflect individually and capture your thoughts Spend 20 minutes sharing your views, and come up with your tables’ TOP 3 ‘ideas’ © Optimise Limited 2015

If we all play a part we can make this happen Hints We will take away all your suggestions to develop a standardised Carers Welcome Pack that can be used across RDaSH © Optimise Limited 2015

THANK YOU! Our values put our customers, our people and our stakeholders at the forefront of what we do and how we behave. As well as guiding our everyday behaviour they are reflected in many of the things that we do as a business such as Viewpoint, our survey of staff to find out how we can improve the business for them, town meetings where the board sets out the company’s vision for the coming year to staff across the country, and our store leadership programme which means that we support and train our staff as they develop so that they are confident and capable in what they do. Values have a number of benefits. They: provide a common theme for our 330,000 people in 13 different countries; get buy-in from our people to grow the company and manage change; they set high standards of behaviour with colleagues, customers, suppliers and stakeholders; and make our people feel better about themselves and working for us. This is reflected in how they perform. We also have some key principles. NEXT SLIDE - Principles © Optimise Limited 2015

John Campaign Founded in November 2015 by Nicci Gerrard and Julia Jones Carers should not just be allowed but should be welcomed A collaboration between the patients and all connected with them is crucial to their health and their well-being Applies to all hospital settings: acute, community and mental health Over 1000 institutions have pledged support so far

Guiding principles: Carers should have access to the patient whenever they are needed (where appropriate) – By carers we mean whoever primarily supports the person with dementia when they are not in hospital. The patients needs are at the centre of this access principle – whatever supports their personal wellbeing is likely to make their medical treatment more effective and will promote their secure discharge. Carers should be welcomed – They are an essential part of the patient’s team. Carers have a right (but not a duty) to be with the person they care for – John’s campaign focusses on the unpaid ‘family’ carer. Carers are there to nurture not to nurse.

Our Pledge At the Triangle of Care Steering group meeting on 14 June, the following pledge was agreed: “We support John’s Campaign and pledge to: Introduce Champions in all areas who have a specific role to play in engaging with friends and relatives; Pilot flexible visiting times in appropriate areas; Involve friends and families in initiatives such as afternoon teas and carers fayres; Introduce Friends and Relatives Corners on appropriate wards”

What next: A poster displaying our pledge for display on all the wards An article in Trust Matters to promote the fact that we are supporting John’s Campaign to include our pledge Promotion through the Carer Champion Network
