1.3 Topographic maps show the shape of the land

Topographic maps use contour lines to show features. Topography: is the shape, or features, of a land. Topographic map: flat map that uses lines to show Earth’s surface features and the shape of the land.

Topographic maps show the shape of the land.

Topographic maps show the shape of the land.

Topographic maps use contour lines to show features. Contour lines: wiggly lines showing an area’s elevation, slope, and relief. Elevation of a place is how high above sea level it is. Number of contour lines shows elevation of different points.

Topographic maps use contour lines to show features. Slope: is the steep an area. The steeper the slope, the closer the contour lines will be. What does it mean when the contour lines are farther apart? The slope is not as steep. What is the difference between elevation and slop? Elevation is the height above sea level while slope is the steepness of the land.

Topographic maps use contour lines to show features. Area’s Relief = Lowest elevation - highest elevation.

Contour Lines Show

What is the elevation of the top of Mount Hood? 3426 Meters What is the difference between elevation and slop? Elevation is the height above sea level and slope is the steepness of the land What is the relief ? 1750-1500.

Contour lines follow certain rules. Lines never cross Circles show highest to lowest Contour interval is always the same on a map interval. Contour interval: the difference in elevation from one contour line to the next. Index contour lines mark elevations. The darker contour lines on a map are called contour lines.

Index contour lines mark elevations. Index contour lines: the darker contour lines on a map. Numbers indicating elevations are written on these lines. What information do index contour lines provide? They are labeled with specific elevations.
