Bishop Justus Church of England School Morning Worship Remember the Saints of God 6th November 2017 Bishop Justus Church of England School

Let the light of Christ shine in our lives Gather The Lord be with you And also with you Let the light of Christ shine in our lives

Receive I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him… Continues on next slide

Receive … so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints. A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Ephesians

Engage All Saints' Day (also known as All Hallows' Day). It is a feast day celebrated on 1st November by Christians in Western Europe. It is an opportunity to remember all saints and martyrs, known and unknown, throughout Christian history. Remembering saints and martyrs and dedicating a specific day to them each year has been a Christian tradition since the 4th century AD… Continues on next slide

Engage … but it wasn't until 609AD that Pope Boniface IV decided to remember all martyrs. Later, in 837AD, Pope Gregory IV extended the festival to remember all the saints and changed its name to Feast of All Saints.

Engage (Teacher – introduce the subject of Icons - see notes section) Reflection suggestion … “The protecting veil” by John Tavener (just play a few minutes and fade out the music) and use the icon on the next slide. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xT0MF4XNjkA&t=1648s Some discussion ideas … Who is your “icon”? (Person you admire). What helps you think about bigger concepts e.g. beauty, joy, heaven. Is the concept of beauty a human construction? If yes (or no), what is beauty? Aims - To explore the different meanings and significance of icons. Preparation and time for reflection The word 'icon' is widely used for celebrities and so on, but comes from the Greek eikon, meaning 'image', and is more properly used to refer to sacred images found in Greek Orthodox churches. We all have our favourite pop or football icons. The term ‘icon’ is also used in computer technology – we click on an icon on a computer screen to give us information or lead us through to a computer game and so on. An iconographer creates an icon, not as a painting, but as an act of meditation. He or she describes this work as a process of transforming everyday materials into sacred ones; earthly things are used to paint a heavenly subject. Icons usually depict Jesus, Mary, the saints or an event in the Bible. For many Christians, an icon enables the viewer to communicate with God via the person or people depicted in the image. Icons are treasured by those fortunate enough to own them. In churches and homes, they are adored and venerated, they are taken on pilgrimages or lovingly paraded around during great Church events. Many icons have been damaged by the wear and tear of daily use. They are loved rather than neglected – literally loved to bits! (Play music. - An image or a copy of an icon could be used as a focus during the ‘Time for reflection’ part of the Worship. One clearly showing a single figure, such as Jesus or Mary, would be the most suitable.)

Respond Amen We thank God for all the Saints [Reflect for a minute on the worship theme and our engagement …] We thank God for all the Saints who, by their life and example, have shown us what it really means to be a Christian. Amen Prayer / reflection technique – Give a summary of the theme and any responses that students may have made, then invite everyone to be still (remind no books open etc – lessen distraction). To pray or reflect on today’s worship. Be quiet for one minute. Then say the prayer …

Go out into the world with the light of Christ Let us bless the Lord Thanks be to God Go out into the world with the light of Christ
