4. Receive
Then Jesus led the disciples out as far as Bethany, and, lifting up his hands, he blessed them. While he was blessing them, he withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven. And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy; and they were continually in the temple blessing God.
From the Gospel according to Luke, chapter 24, verses 50-53

5. Engage
After the resurrection of Jesus he appeared to many of the disciples and followers. He taught them about the Son of God and how he would not be with them physically but that the Holy Spirit of God would be with them for all time.
Many Christians celebrate the moment that Jesus physically left the disciples and went into heaven – Ascension Day.

6. Engage Video suggestion … a film version of the Ascension -
Some discussion ideas …
Jesus gave instructions to his followers before he ascended to heaven – why are instructions important, how do they help us in our everyday lives?
Who do you trust to give you good instructions about life, and why?
Discussion techniques - Go back to the Bible passage ask “How does the theme link with the Bible passage?”
Discuss the question in pairs for 30 seconds then invite a response from each pair.
Use quick-fire answers e.g. throw a soft bean bag / toy to a student, when they answer they throw it back and you quickly throw to another student.
Simplify the question - Invite quick one-word answers, write them on the board, then reflect on the answers – see connections.

7. Respond Amen Risen Christ,
[Reflect for a minute on the worship theme and our engagement …]
Risen Christ,
you have raised our human nature to the throne of heaven:
help us to seek and serve you,
that we may join you at the Father’s side,
where you reign with the Spirit in glory,
now and for ever.

Prayer / reflection technique – Give a summary of the theme and any responses that students may have made, then invite everyone to be still (remind no books open etc – lessen distraction). To pray or reflect on today’s worship. Be quiet for one minute. Then say the prayer …
