1.01 Solving One and Two Step Equations

An equation is a statement that shows two expressions are equal. The solution to an equation is the value of the variable that makes the equation true. To find the solution, the variable must be isolated on one side of the equal sign. To isolate the variable on one side, remove any numbers and operations from that side by doing the opposite operation with that number to both sides.

Solve: Solve: x + 5 = 14 x – 3 = 9 – 5 – 5 + 3 + 3 ____________ – 5 – 5 + 3 + 3 ____________ ____________ x = 9 x = 12

Solve: Solve: 8x = 56 ___ ___ 8 8 x = 7 (3) (3) x = 24

When solving a two-step equation, there are two numbers that have to be removed from the same side as the variable. To solve a two-step equation, undo the addition or subtraction first, then undo the multiplication or division. Solve: Solve: – 1 = 6 2x + 6 = 14 + 1 + 1 – 6 – 6 ____________ ____________ 2x = 8 ___ ___ ( 3 ) ( 3 ) = 7 2 2 x = 4 . x = 21

Solve: Solve: 2x + 3 = 13 7x – 5 = 9 + 5 + 5 ___________ ____________ – 3 – 3 + 5 + 5 ___________ ____________ 2x = 10 7x = 14 ___ ___ ___ ___ 2 2 7 7 x = 5 x = 2
