Example of a negative influence: Some advertisements create low self-esteem in women by portraying unrealistic images of the body.

Example of a positive influence: TV may help teach children how to behave appropriately. (e.g. Sesame Street). Also, children's television shows have helped children count and read.

In groups of 3, think and discuss at least 3 positive - What does the portrayal of men and women in media say about society's values?

Media as an agent of socialization -The media represents one of the “nurture” factors that influences our sense of self. -The media shapes so much of our life, such as our political views, values, attitudes, our perception of beauty and a sense of what is and is not important.

On a scale of 1 to 10 how has the media shaped who we are today?

What can we change so the media won't be such a huge influence?

Let’s learn from Hilary Clinton

Why is there such a negative response to her looks?

Should we be more cautious of what we show in the media?
