7 Processes of Socialisation
Our families and other agencies of socialisation help us to develop our personalities and a sense of who we are. This includes ethnic, gender and social identities (next lesson!) Families do this through the following processes…

8 Manipulation Children are controlled into certain behaviour
Parents encourage behaviour that they approve of and discourage behaviour through praise and punishment These are known as _______ and ________ sanctions?

9 Canalisation Children are directed by parents into certain interests. This can include taking them to certain sporting activities, music lessons, reading to them. Can you identify what activities your parents encouraged you to do? Are they different to your brother/sister? Jot a few down in your books

10 Language Social activities
Adults speak to girls and boys in different ways. Phrases such as ‘Boys don’t cry’ and ‘little princess’ This can led to teaching young children their gender roles. What term can you remember the teacher using for the boys and girl in the ‘should schools be gender neutral’ clip Social activities Girls often encouraged to feminine activities such as dance, which teaches grace and beauty. Whilst boys may be encouraged to play team games such as football, which emphasises competition.

11 Modelling Adults show children how to behave by what they do.
Children will imitate (copy) their parents and act as they do. Adults become role models for children who copy them. Albert Bandura – psychologist who suggested that children copy what they see and learned violence from the media

13 Ann Oakley Well known Sociologist famous for being a feminist. What is feminism? The belief that men and women should be more equal She studied how children learn gender roles She suggests that feminine behaviour is a result of primary socialisation

14 Masculinity and Femininity
What does this mean? All agencies of socialisation, including education, family, media - transmit ideas of masculinity and femininity Masculine – seen as normal for males Feminine – seen as normal for females The media play a particularly important role in this process.

20 Ideas The media are an important agencies of informal secondary socialisation. They set norms and values. The media is big business! The people who create media know what will appeal to us They sell media - music and games as well as advertising products for us to buy. The media may present negative images to represent certain groups, e.g. ethnicity, gender, age, social class The media often uses stereotypes when telling stories because it makes stories easy to follow. Heroes are usually good looking, baddies ugly! Children learn to apply these stereotypes in real life and act as though they are real.
