TRAIN Project

TRAIN project Preliminary results Sector linked closely to national infrastructure and (mainly) national rail companies Approaches to transportation and mobility policy Competition between high-speed and regional trafic Local and regional trafic generate more employment than long- distance Toll for rail -- but : toll for road usage ? National standards (signalling etc.) function as trade-barriers: harmonization on EU-level? Public procurement at stake

Internal contradictions Rail companies offer also road-freight Competition between passenger and freight on the (same) rail Current crisis Scrapped projects for high-speed Lack of maintenance of insfrastructure (but not only due to crisis) Delayed investment in rolling stock

Privatization of the rail sector ? IndustriAll members oppose ETF members sometimes in favour H&S is a topic in the sector Heavy-industry But long working cycles (~20 min) Stress in the engineering divisions Ageing workforce Professional training

TRAIN: political resolution Curbing transport is an option ! High-speed must not be a competitor with local and regional transport Safety and security must be ensured in a new approach (in the past : national rail company) Public procurement : Cost can not be the only criterium Quality and life-cycle of the product should be included Protectionism / economic nationalism
