That FROM Which God’s Love Saves Us: PERISHING! Man’s worst horror = “Perishing” (3:15, 16) Perish does not mean to cease to be or exist Means “to be ruined, to be lost; lose usefulness of purpose” God does not want anyone to “perish” (2 Pet. 3:7-9) Man’s disobedience has always led to “perishing” (3:14; Num. 21:4-9) The love of God provided opportunity for salvation, which required faithful obedience (21:8-9) Without God, man is helpless and perishing! At His cross, I find the ultimate demonstration of His love!
That FOR Which God’s Love Saves Us: ETERNAL LIFE! Man’s ultimate reward = “Eternal Life” (3:15, 16) This is not “eternal existence” (Matt. 25:46) This is more than “immortality,” meaning we will never die (Rom. 2:7) Eternal life involves eternally: Living in God’s glory (Rom. 8:18; Col. 3:4; 2 Thess. 1:9; Rev. 21:23; 2:7) Living in bodies like the Lord’s glorious body (Phil. 3:20-21; 1 John 3:2) Worshiping the Lamb of God (Rev. 5:8-14; 14:1-5; 15:1-4) Enjoying a love, joy and peace that will never end (Rev. 21:3-4) Dwelling with the redeemed of all ages (Rev. 20:15; 14:4; 2 Pet. 3:13) Resting from earthly troubles (2 Thess. 1:7; Heb. 4:9-11; Luke 16:25) Reigning with Him forever and ever (Rev. 22:5; 2 Tim. 2:12) Without God, eternal life would be impossible! At His Cross, I find the ultimate demonstration of His love!
That BY Which God’s Love Saves Us: HIS SON! God’s Greatest Gift: (not eternal life) “His Son” (3:16, 17) Jesus Himself once said, “It is more blessed to give” (Acts 20:35) We see the ultimate demonstration of love (1 John 4:9-10) God gave His Son for us When we didn’t love Him (1 John 4:9-10) When we were sinners (Rom. 5:8) When we were helpless and weak (Rom. 5:6) When we were ungodly (Rom. 5:6) When we were enemies (Rom. 5:10) When we were gone astray (Isa. 53:6) When we were lost in our aimless conduct (1 Pet. 1:18) When we were dead in our trespasses (Eph. 2:4-7)
That BY Which God’s Love Saves Us: HIS SON! God’s Son became our sin offering (Isa. 53:10), bearing our sins (53:11), having been smitten by God (53:4) He took our place (Rom. 6:23 + Heb. 2:9) He took our sins (2 Cor. 5:21 + Isa. 53:6) He took our punishment (1 John 4:10b + Isa. 53:8) God’s gift of His Son was fully adequate to accomplish His purpose (John 3:17) Without God, we would still be lost in our sins! At His Cross, I find the ultimate demonstration of His love!
The Love of God Compelled Him to Give His Son That We Might Be Saved! What has the love of God compelled you to do? To believe Him? (John 3:16 + 3:36) To love Him? (1 John 4:19 + John 14:15) To obey Him? (1 John 5:3 + Heb. 5:9) Are you saved? Do you believe that Jesus is God’s Son (John 8:24)? Have you repented of your sins and turned to God (Acts 2:38)? Have you confessed your faith in Jesus Christ (Rom. 10:9)? Have you been immersed into Christ (Rom. 6:3-4)? Are you living faithfully to the Lord and His will (John 14:15)?
