Understanding Weather Symbols

TYPICAL MEDIA WEATHER MAP Look at the symbols. What weather does Eastern England have? What is the weather like in Northern Scotland ?

This is an example of a synoptic chart. Weather is recorded on the chart using special symbols, which represent the conditions at weather station at that present time. Understanding Weather Symbols

A number here shows temperature The lines at the end show the wind speed. The circle shows the level of cloud cover. 7 The condition of the weather is shown underneath. (for example this shows that there is fog) The line coming off the circle shows the direction the wind is coming from.

HOW IS WEATHER SHOWN ON A WEATHER MAP? Present weather Mist Fog Thunder Drizzle Rain Snow Shower Heavy rain Heavy snow Hail The shower symbol can be combined with others…. Rain shower Hail shower Snow shower Temperature is shown at the top left of the circle Drizzle Present weather is shown by the symbol at the bottom left of the circle

Understanding Weather Symbols Don't panic...

HOW IS WEATHER SHOWN ON A WEATHER MAP? (3) Cloud cover is shown by the amount of shading inside the station circle. Cloud cover is measured in oktas Eighths of the sky ! Clear sky 1 okta 2 oktas 3 oktas I hope it doesn’t cloud over 4 oktas 5 oktas 6 oktas 7 oktas 8 oktas Overcast © Microsoft Word clipart obscured

Understanding Weather Symbols Wind Five knots is added for each half a feather. The wind speed is shown by the ‘feathers’. 10 knots. Understanding Weather Symbols Where the wind has come from…. Winds are named after their origin.

Understanding Weather Symbols Other conditions... Eight Oktas- cloud cover. Understanding Weather Symbols 5 Heavy Rain. Sometimes a number may represent the temperature.

Unusually high winds, considering lack of cloud cover and temperature. Anything wrong? Unusually high winds, considering lack of cloud cover and temperature. Understanding Weather Symbols High temperature but snow! * 21 Snow, but no cloud cover.

Understanding Weather Symbols Get a white board between you and the person sitting next to you. Take turns and use the white board to draw a weather symbol. The person who is not drawing needs to work out what the weather is like. They can not use their jotters, see how much you can remember! Understanding Weather Symbols
