Polygons Lesson What is a polygon? A polygon is a simple, closed, two-dimensional figure formed by three or more line segments (sides). Closed?
Possible categories: * polygons * 3 angles * 3 sides * Equilateral triangles: all sides are congruent * Scalene triangles: all sides are different.

Presentation transcript:

MATH: Unit 6 2D Figures 10 Days Classify two-dimensional figures into categories based on their properties. G.3 Understand that attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category. For example, all rectangles have four right angles and squares are rectangles, so all squares have four right angles. G.4 Classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy based on properties(polygons, triangles, and quadrilaterals).

MATH: Unit 6 2D Figures New Knowledge: The students will know ·         attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category and the following vocabulary words ·         irregular ·         regular New Skills: The students will be able to sort polygons and non-polygons into given categories according to shared attributes (e.g., at least one right angle, at least one pair of parallel sides, at least one obtuse angle, equal sides, etc.)  (G.3) sort polygons and non-polygons into different categories according to shared attributes and explain the criteria for sorting (e.g., all the shapes in this group are quadrilaterals because they have four sides) (G.3) create subcategories within  a larger category according to shared attributes (e.g., create a category of triangles, then within that category have subcategories of isosceles and right triangles that further sort the triangles by sides or angles) (G.3) use graphic organizers to record results of sorting and list attributes that apply to figures within the categories (G.3) classify polygons as regular or irregular (G.3) classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy according to properties (e.g., see the hierarchy examples below) (G.4)

Unit 6 REVIEW SENTENCES A square is always a r and a r . A trapezoid is always a q . A rhombus is always a p . A trapezoid is never a p . 5. A polygon with sides that are all congruent is called a _____________polygon. 6. An equilateral triangle and a square are always ________polygons. 7. An isosceles triangle, a scalene triangle, and rectangles are NEVER _________ polygons.

UNIT 6: 2D Figures OBJECTIVES POLYGONS 2-dimensional shapes made of at least 3 straight lines "closed" (all the lines connect up) NOT a POLYGON 2D shape with a curve and/or open side (s) Polygon  (straight sides) Not a Polygon  (has a curve) Not a Polygon  (open, not closed)

UNIT 6: 2D Figures OBJECTIVES REGULAR POLYGONS All sides are equal (congruent) All angles are equal (congruent) IRREGULAR POLYGONS Sides are unequal Angles are unequal

Group Practice REGULAR vs. IRREGULAR POLYGON Circle the figures that are regular polygons. Explain why the one figure not circled is an irregular polygon.

Group Practice REGULAR vs. IRREGULAR POLYGON Circle the triangles that are regular polygons. Explain why the one triangle not circled is an irregular polygon.

UNIT 6: 2D Figures OBJECTIVES TRIANGLES Equilateral - all _______and ________are equal (congruent) Isosceles- sides and ____angles are equal (congruent) Scalene - all sides and angles are ______________

UNIT 6: 2D Figures OBJECTIVES TRIANGLES – draw an example of each Obtuse- one obtuse angle (> 90) Acute- all acute angles (< 90) Right - one right angle (=90)

Group Practice Label the following triangles as Equilateral, Isosceles, Scalene & acute, obtuse, or right _______________ 4) _________________ _______________ ________________ 2) ________________ 5) ________________ _______________ _______________ 3) ________________ 6) _______________

UNIT 6: 2D Figures OBJECTIVES QUADRILATERALS Polygons with 4 sides and 4 vertices The sum of the interior angles = 360 °

UNIT 6: 2D Figures Classifications of Quadrilaterals trapezoid - at least one pair of opposite sides are ________________ Isosceles Trapezoid - one pair of parallel sides; the two other sides are of equal length; the vertex angles, at the end of each parallel side are of equal measure quadrilateral - __________ pairs of opposite sides are parallel ; opposite angles of equal measure rhombus - _____ sides of equal length ; opposite angles of equal measure rectangle - opposite sides of equal ________; each angle is a ________angle square - _____ sides of equal length ; each angle is a _________angle
