What is the Scientific Method? A set of investigation procedures used to solve a problem

Scientific Method ( P R H E D C ) 1) State the PROBLEM 2) RESEARCH 3) Form a HYPOTHESIS (an educated guess) 4) Test the hypothesis in a controlled EXPERIMENT 5) Analyze the DATA 6) Draw a CONCLUSION

Parts of a Controlled Experiment 1) Variables: factors in an experiment that can change Independent Variable: the variable that you change Dependent Variable: the variable that MAY change due to the independent variable 2) Control Group: A group that is NOT changed in the experiment. It’s kept that same for comparison 3) Experimental Group: A group that has the changed variable 4) Constants: variables that are kept the same for both control and experimental groups

Microwave Miracle Patrick believes fish that eat food exposed to microwaves will become smarter and would be able to swim through a maze faster. He decides to perform an experiment by placing fish food in a microwave for 20 seconds. He has the fish swim through a maze and records the time it takes for each one to make it to the end. He feeds the special food to 10 fish and gives the regular food to 10 others. After 1 week, he has the fish swim through the maze again and records the times for each. According to the data, the fish given food exposed to microwaves swim MUCH faster and appear to even be a bit smarter! Which group was the control group? 2. What was the dependent variable? 3. What was the independent variable? 4. What were some of the constants? 5. What hypothesis might be stated before doing this experiment? 6. What type of graph would be best to use to illustrate the outcome?
