Aims and Practices of the Organization WTO handles: Trade negotiations, Builds Trade capacity. Promotes Peace Ensures Countries abide to the policies The Main Goal of the WTO: To help producers of goods and services, exporters, and importers conduct their business.

Structure of the Organization -159 countries that work together to regulate trade and set standards for settling disputes between countries - 6 main agreements: Goods, Services, Intellectual Property, Disputes, and Trade Policy Reviews - All countries have equal voting rights

Effects of the organization Increased globalization World Cooperation Increases legitimacy of less developed countries through “Plan of Action for Least Developed Countries” which provides technical assistance and enables them to participate better in the multilateral system.

Case Study #1- Canadian Wine Sale Restriction Canada only allows provincial wine to be sold in its standard grocery stores, meaning the value of imported wine has dropped The US recently made a request on 10/2/17, after a first request was made by the US on 1/18/17

Case Study #2 Steel Safeguards Case brought by Chinese Taipei and Vietnam Indonesia – Safeguard on Certain Iron or Steel Products Wanted to create safety procedures on iron on non-alloy steel No resolution of dispute, but temporary safety measures put in place

Case Study #3 WTO dispute panel established to rule on Canadian aircraft subsidies Brazil submitted request for establishment of a panel to examine Canadian measures providing subsidies to Bombardier to develop its C-series aircraft Canada disappointed by the request, and says they are complying with the WTO obligations
