ISAAC NEWTON By: Nam-Y8

Basic facts Isaac Newton was an English physicist, mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher. Isaac Newton is described as “one of the greatest physicists and mathematicians” to ever live aside from Einstein and Schrodinger. Isaac Newton was born in England on Christmas Day of 1642 and he died on 20 March 1726. Isaac Newton was poor but he was very smart. He discovered a lot in physics and mathematics.

Early life Newton’s dad was also named Isaac Newton. Newton’s father never saw his son and Newton was never expected to live. Newton’s mother remarried a minister and went on to live with him. That led Newton to stay with his grandmother. When Newton was 12, he was back with his mother because of the minister’s death. When Newton went to school, he really liked chemistry but his mother wanted her son to become a farmer. Newton eventually failed farming and decided to give up.

University years Newton attended Cambridge’s Trinity College after his uncle persuaded his mother to let Newton attend there. Newton studied the normal curriculum but he really wanted to do more advanced science. In his spare time, he would read philosophers’ extracts. Newton graduated with the title of honor and he got financial support for future education. In 1665, the Great Plague came to Britain and the university was forced to close so Newton studied at home. That was when he discovered the idea of light, calculus, and the laws of motion.

Back to university When Cambridge opened again, Newton came back there to receive his Masters degree in Arts. That time, he found a book on how to solve the infinite series. He shared his findings with his friend Isaac Barrow but he didn’t include his name. Barrow then shared Newton’s results with mathematician John Collins. Barrow then resigned as a professor and gave Newton the position of professor. Newton taught physics and mathematics at the university.

Later life Newton later resigned as a professor and then decided to do individual research. In 1672, he made the discovery of light, color, and optics. He published a book about the discovery in 1704. Newton had a lot of rivalry from other physicists in the Royal Academy. In that time, the Royal Academy was where the smartest physicists and mathematicians in Britain were. In 1687, Newton published Principia, a book about natural laws of physics and science. When Newton discovered calculus, he published it in a book called Method of Fluxions.

Discoveries Newton made a lot of discoveries and here are some of them. Differential calculus Planetary motion laws Gravity Light, optics, and color Differential equations Classical mechanics

Equations

Characteristics Newton was a hardworking and an interested scientist and mathematician, he was already interested in science and math since he was in middle school. Newton tried to explain his findings as informative as possible. Newton never gave up, he got into a controversy for the discovery of calculus with Gottfried Leibniz (a German mathematician), but he fought hard to defend his idea that he discovered it first. Newton carried his experiments carefully. Newton was a very smart man.

Quotes “If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants “What goes up must come down.” “I can calculate the motion of heavenly bodies, but not the madness of people.” “Errors are not in the art but in the artificers.”
