UF Digital Collections, Curated Collections, and Collaborative Opportunities Hi, I’m Laurie Taylor, the DH librarian. Welcome to the Smathers Library. This was formerly known as Library East and was once the main library on campus. It now holds Special Collections. In a few minutes, we’ll go upstairs to see the Reading Room where you can request Special Collections materials for in-room only use. The UF Libraries have also sought to digitize special and other unique materials whenever resources allow. The libraries have continuously sought to add complementary services and opportunities to the digital resources to better support the role of the libraries in collaborating with researchers and to best support changes in how research is done and what research means. UF Digital Collections

http://ufdc.ufl.edu This shows the homepage for the UF Digital Collections or UFDC. On one level, UFDC is like any other library resource, if that resource is amazing. UFDC includes over 500 digital collections, over 7.9 million pages of unique manuscripts and letters, antique maps, rare children's literature books, theses and dissertations, newspapers, historic photographs, oral histories, data sets, and more. Many of the materials are from the holdings in this building.

One of the collections is the Florida Digital Newspaper Library One of the collections is the Florida Digital Newspaper Library. UF supports this statewide program, which developed from the PK Yonge Library collection and its history of preserving and providing access to local Florida newspapers. http://ufdc.ufl.edu/newspapers

Another collection is the African Studies Digital Collection which includes many African art objects from the Harn Museum.

Harn Museum of Art History Miami Jacksonville Public Library Matheson Museum National Library of Jamaica Panama Canal Museum Universidad de Oriente (Venezuela) University of Miami UFDC is so much more than the technology or the stuff already online. UF’s sheer size and scale demands a great deal. UF has leveraged that capacity to support others as well, serving as the technical infrastructure partner for over 90 other institutions. This slide shows a list of our partners. There are always new partners, so this is always out of date. The list shows academic institutions, scholarly societies, NGOs, GLAMS (galleries, libraries, archives, and museums), publishers, governmental agencies, and more. 6

For policy, partners retain all rights to their materials and simply grant permissions to allow for access and preservation. UF and some of the dLOC partners have been supporting access and preservation in the same manner for over 80 years, just changing the technology from paper, microfilm, and digital. These relationships and similar connections are critically important. The UF Libraries are a connecting node, leveraging technology and our partnerships in service of scholarly needs and creating new collaborative opportunities. A cooperative digital library for resources from and about the Caribbean and circum-Caribbean.

Tools and Collaborative Opportunities myUFDC / myDLOC Submit items for permanent preservation and access Opportunities Internships Class projects Exhibits Grant-related activities Unearthing St. Augustine Vodou Archive Jewish Floridian Collaborative connections Across UF and with US and international partners We also have tools. The user tools, which you can access right now with your Gatorlinks allow you to submit items for permanent access and preservation. The libraries also offer many opportunities. Clearly, you can interact with materials in traditional ways and UF’s online resources from Special Collections are amazing. Many students have also done internships and projects with the libraries. We also help by referring to others on campus like the Museum Studies Program, the Oral History Program, and others. 8
