4. OVERVIEW OF COLLECTION
Goal: To support scholarship on Zora Neale Hurston’s life and works, and related African American Studies and American Studies topics, and to preserve and digitize Hurston’s papers.
Current Status:
Print + digital, over 200 items
in the digitized collection.
Uniqueness of Collection
Uniqueness of Collection: Part of The Floridians initiative at UF, One of the largest collections on Zora Neale Hurston
The Floridians: “The Floridians makes available the archives, manuscripts and other personal collections of Florida leaders, including architects, visual and performing artists, writers, politicians, ecologists, etc.  These collections contain the priceless and varied record of stewardships that wielded statewide and national significance. The collections also contain a varied picture of local history in Florida communities, the interaction of the environment and development, and the essential changes resulting from Florida's tremendous growth in the 20th century. The record of how our leaders dealt with these challenges rests within these collections.”
Recovery of papers. A large number of papers were saved as they were being burnt after Hurston’s death.
Important work in Haiti on Caribbean culture (and voodoo).

Guide to Papers:
Material: Correspondence, newspaper clippings, articles, manuscripts, photographs, miscellaneous personal papers. Correspondence concerning race relations, Hurston's writings and fieldwork, personal matters; manuscripts of articles, short stories, plays; biographical material about Zora Neale Hurston
Scope: papers support scholarship on a diversity of topics – Hurston’s life and works, race relations, the Caribbean, etc.
Time Span: 1919 onwards
Format: Not all material is digitized
Location: Some documents are located in the P.K. Yonge Library of Florida History at the University of Florida: Three letters to Mary G. Holland (Mrs. Spessard L. Holland) dated and a 1950 Orlando Sentinel Star news article. The University of Florida also holds letters written by and about Hurston in the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Collection, the Edith Pope Papers, and the Tracy L'Engle Angas Papers.

6. OVERVIEW OF COLLECTION: Hurston
The collection includes many letters that Hurston sent out to friends, family, and others.
Highlight: Hurston’s work in Haiti.
The correspondence spans Hurston’s works (ideas, publishers), political and social activities, personal life, etc.
Z.N. handwritten and signed letter to Harper Brothers Fort Pierce, Fla. (1p. 8 1/2 x 11). Would Harper's be interested in her new book, Herod the Great.
Z.N. Postcard to E.O. Grover. (3 x 5 1/2). Has been ill with respiratory ailment, but is coming to Florida. Gift of Frances Grover.
