5.6 Patterns in Tertiary and Quaternary Industries World Geography 3202 5.6 Patterns in Tertiary and Quaternary Industries

5.6.1 Examine factors that affect the location of a tertiary activity. (a) Tertiary activities will locate where there is a demand for them. There are three factors that determine the demand for tertiary activities: 1. The price: They need to be located in areas where people can afford to pay for them. 2. Location: The greater the distance between the service and the people who wish to obtain the service the more expensive the service becomes. This is why services locate near their target market 3. Population: Service industries only locate where there is a population that can sustain them. The larger the population the more services become available

5.6.2 Examine factors that affect the location of a quaternary activity. (a) 1. Population Density Populations of people who are concentrated in an area make the information sector practical - provides a workforce and market. 2. Infrastructure Infrastructure is required for the communication of information…towers, poles, cables, connectivity, computers, satellites, buildings and networks. 3. Education High-tech quaternary industry work requires people with high education levels.

5.6.3 Analyze factors that account for patterns in world trade for a selected commodity.(a) Tourism one of the fastest growing and most profitable sectors of many world economies economy. Countries that do not have many resources, or the means to create industry can use their physical and cultural attributes to attract tourists  From a country's perspective international tourism is new money coming to the country. It functions just as exporting would. commodity is a marketable item produced to satisfy wants or needs

Tourism has increased for 6 reasons 1. Travel has become easier and less expensive. 2. People have increased leisure time due to available technologies. 3. People have increased discretionary spending money. 4. Retired people have secure incomes and are able to travel. 5. Advertising has been effective using attractive & exotic pictures. 6. Travel agencies have packaged attractive "all expenses paid“ trips.

Travel agents see that people are usually looking for one of three different kinds of vacations: 1. Climate oriented (skiing & sun bathing are at opposite extremes but both rely on climate). PLACES?? 2. Landscape oriented (some people like to view the sites). PLACES?? 3. Culture oriented (cultural land marks are of interest to people ex. Athens) . PLACES??

5.6.4 Analyze factors that account for patterns in mass communications. (a) Mass Communication: The delivery of a message to a large number of people Population: For mass communication to be necessary there needs to be concentrated populations who need to communicate over vast distances. The concentration of people creates the workforce, and the market. Education: Mass communication is linked to high-tech work, quaternary sector employment. To have these types of employment there needs to be educated people. Infrastructure: For mass communication to take place there needs to be infrastructure that can support the information flow. Towers, poles, cables, networks, buildings.

In global communications there are areas of activity and there are areas where there is no activity because of a lack of development and no connectivity.  * The more development – the more connectivity.

5.6.5 Examine how mass communications can affect the location of a workplace. (a) Businesses do not need to be located physically near other businesses as we saw with the agglomerating tendency of the manufacturing sector. If Infrastructure improves to the point where it overcomes distances, information technology will be a new source of employment in rural regions. (Call Centers and people working online from home.) However, we may lose high-tech jobs to other countries – educated people but cheap labour.
