Phonics and Reading Workshop Year 2 Phonics and Reading Workshop

Phonics in Year 2 We have 4 phonics groups. Phonics is taught daily either in groups or as a whole class.

Phonics and Reading Phonics provides the tools for learning to read. It helps with: Sounding out and blending Segmenting Reading sight words

Reading Reading is not just reading the words on the page. It is…. Retelling the story Talking about the characters Predicting what could happen next Features of the text Relating to personal experience Discussion around the choice of language Building a personal library.

Reading in year 2 Reading is a big part of our day! In year 2 we take part in… Individual Reading Guided Reading Shared Reading Reading games Sharing stories Reading Comprehension

Spelling in Year 2 Expectations Children need to be able to read on sight and spell more words correctly. How you can help: Practise spellings frequently Play spelling games at home.

Helpful Tips Read with your child as often as possible. Practise spellings together. Say how much you enjoy reading. Know when to stop. Read a range of texts Let your child see you read and write - you are a role model! Point out print in the environment Praise and celebrate with your child about their learning.
