What do you think the purpose of the Penitential Rite is? Remember it is one of the first parts of the Mass. Penitential Rite Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. This is at the start of Mass to put a person in the right frame of mind to celebrate Mass.

Is this helpful or not in understanding the Mass? Why? Eucharistic Prayer The final Amen is sometimes called ‘The Great Amen’. Why do you think this is? Is this helpful or not in understanding the Mass? Why? The Eucharistic Prayer is modelled on a Jewish blessing prayer. The priest prays giving thanks to God. The congregation sings (or says) the Sanctus: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The priest says a longer thanksgiving prayer. The congregation make an acclamation of faith in “The Mystery of Faith”. When we eat this bread and drink this cup we proclaim your death O Lord Until you come again. The priest concludes with a doxology -  "For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and forever.” The congregation responds by singing (or saying) ‘Amen’.

The Sign of the Peace After the Lord’s Prayer the priest says: “The Peace of the Lord be with you always” to which the congregation reply “And with your spirit.” The Priest then says, “Let us offer each other the sign of peace.” This should be a dignified moment in the Mass. It is an acceptance of the other person to whom you reach out your hand and is a recognition of solidarity. The Sign of the Peace is a sign of reconciliation. The tradition goes back to early Christians. Why is this an important moment in Mass? How many different reasons can you think of?

Explain what ‘transubstantiation’ means in your own words. Discuss why Mass is or isn’t just a re-enactment of the Last Supper. What facts would you select to explain the importance of Melchizedek? Examine how a different Religion of your choice celebrates Mass and write down the similarities and differences in comparison to our Catholic Mass. Create a poster illustrating the ‘dos and don’ts’ to receive the Eucharist. Write a paragraph convincing a third person about it that the Eucharist is the “source and summit” of Christian life.
