Living Water

“With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.” Isaiah 12:3

Isaiah Chapter 12 Songs of Praise In that day you will say: “I will praise you, Lord. Although you were angry with me, your anger has turned away and you have comforted me. Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defense;he has become my salvation.” With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. “Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name; make known among the nations what he has done, and proclaim that his name is exalted. Sing to the Lord, for he has done glorious things; let this be known to all the world. Shout aloud and sing for joy, people of Zion, for great is the Holy One of Israel among you.”

Prayers for our world ‘More than 1.1 billion people worldwide lack access to safe water and 2.4 billion lack basic sanitation facilities. As a result 2.2 million children aged under five die from diarrhoeal diseases each year. Women and children in poorer countries spend hours each day collecting and carrying water. The weight of water carried can be more than 25 kilogrammes.’   Here are 2 examples of women who face life or death because of the water situation in their country.

Felina andBenjamin: in Malawi Show the picture of Felina and Benjamin   Show the picture of Felina and Benjamin Felina moved to Lilongwe, the capital city of Malawi to look for work, because there was little work for her in the country. Her husband had died and she has to support her 3 year old son Benjamin. But the worst floods in half a century have forced 174,000 from their homes Now, like so many families in Malawi, Felina and Benjamin face illness and lack of food caused by the floods So many are suffering because the crops failed to grow in the heavy rain – now they are without food and without a source of income. Let us pray For Felina and Benjamin and the thousands of families that are living in the wake of these severe floods For the work Christian Aid is doing to train farmers to use methods that will withstand the severe weather For the population of Malawi – 85% of which depend on agriculture for their income – that advice and support will reach them That Christian charities will show the message of the Gospel that “Religion that God our Father considers to be pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” James 1:27

Margaret: in Kenya Margaret is the headmistress of a primary school in Kenya There, they are experiencing the worst drought in 60 years The school was almost closed because the number of pupils fell from 60 to 15. Because of the drought the children must walk for miles to fetch water for their family and so can’t attend school Margaret says, “Water is everything, and this happened so suddenly – the river dried up and there was no water.” The drought is the main reason that the children don’t come to school – they are ill because they drink dirty water or they must walk miles to collect water. Let us pray For the work Tearfund is doing, working together with local water committees in Kenya to ensure clean water for Margaret’s community and others like it For women like Margaret who are suffering because of the drought and who want to see change for the better in their communities That Jesus, our ‘Living Water’ will be known and glorified in communities throughout Kenya
