Introduction questions:
Symbiotic Relationships. Symbiosis Symbiosis is a close ecological relationship between the individuals of two (or more) different species.
Population – group of individuals of the same species
Interactions of Living Things Ecology 3. Species Smallest grouping of living based on characteristics – Must be able to produce offspring that can reproduce.
Symbiosis. Populations that live in close physical contact with each other interact in a variety of ways.

Relationships in an Ecosystem
Symbiosis: Organisms can have close ecological relationships in ecosystems Mutualism (+,+) both organisms benefit from the relationship Remoras clean sharks.

Presentation transcript:

Both organisms benefit (Symbiotic) A very close relationship needed for survival between particular types of organisms (Friendship) (Enemy) (acquaintance) Both organisms benefit One benefits and one is hurt but not usually killed One benefits and the other is not affected Predator/Prey: Hunting Competition: many organisms want the same limited resource

Which Symbiotic Relationships are these????????

The barnacles attach to the whale so they can be moved around to get food. The whale does not appear to be harmed

Several Flowers growing in the same spot.

The Lynx trying to catch and eat the hare.

The clownfish is protected by the stinging sea anemone and in return the clownfish scares off fish that would want to eat the anemone. The clownfish also cleans the anemone.

When cows walk they stir up bugs from the grass When cows walk they stir up bugs from the grass. The Egrets eat the bugs.

Bees get nectar from a plant to make honey. The plant gets its pollen (sperm) spread to other plants.

These are heart worms. They live in the heart of the dog and can eventually kill the animal. Dogs can get heart worms from a mosquito.

An Ox-pecker eats the parasites off animals

It completely takes over any area it is in Kudzu came to the US in the 1800’s. It traditionally came from Asia. It completely takes over any area it is in

A wasp lays its egg inside of this caterpillar A wasp lays its egg inside of this caterpillar. When the eggs hatch they will eat the caterpillar from the inside out.

The ants protect the aphids The ants protect the aphids. The aphids drink liquid from the plant and give it to the ants.

The spider eats any organism that gets trapped in its web.

Lichen is a fungus growing with green algae Lichen is a fungus growing with green algae. The algae makes food for the fungus. The fungus gives the algae a place to live (habitat).

This Shrimp sets up a cleaning station This Shrimp sets up a cleaning station. Different fish come by so the shrimp can eat the parasites off the fish

A tick! They like to suck the blood of other animals.

Bacteria live in these nodules (the little round things) on the roots of plants. The bacteria give nitrogen to the plant from the air. The plant gives the bacteria food.
