LO: to name, locate and label the parts of the plant Each part of the plant has a different job to carry out.

The Roots The job of the root is to take up water and nutrients from the soil up into the plant.

The Stem The job of the stem is to support the plant and keep it upright.

Leaf The leaf soaks up sunlight for the plant. Sunlight is needed to help the plant make food.

Let’s recap…. Can you remember the names of the parts of the plant and what they do? Get ready to act! We are going to pretend that we are little seeds. Let’s see if we can grow and turn into a beautiful flower!

What do plants need to grow? Can you help the seed to grow into a plant? http://www.firstschoolyears.com/science/living/interactive/growing-plants.swf

LO: To state the function of a plant’s roots and stem

Non Living things Non-living things are not alive. Non-living things do not need food, water, or air.

Living things All living things grow and change. All living things need food, water, and air to live.

Let’s predict…. In partners, discuss what you think plants might need to grow.

Plants must have these things to grow…. Sunlight Air Water Nutrients or minerals from the soil

When a seed has sunlight, air, water, and nutrients it will begin to germinate or start to grow.

The Roots The Roots: anchor the plant in the soil takes in water and nutrients from the soil.

The Stem The stem: holds up the plant moves water and nutrients through the plant to the leaves and flower.

The Leaves Leaves use light, air, water, and nutrients to make food for the plant.

The Flower Flowers make fruits that hold seeds. Flowers are brightly coloured to attract insects.
