The report on the IBR-2 modernization V.Ananiev, A.Vinogradov PAC CMP, 26-27 January, 2009

Works on the IBR-2 modernization proceed according to: "The program of works on the IBR-2 reactor in a shutdown mode"; the license for operation of the reactor (expired date - December 31, 2011) The detailed plan of technical works and corresponding financing is quarterly made.

Performance of planned works in 2008 (as of 01.01.2009) № Works Status 1. Dismantling of old equipment completed 2. Installation of new equipment under the schedule 3. Manufacturing of new technological equipment and electronics 4. Cryogenic moderators complex 5. Building and construction activities

1. Dismantling of old equipment Rolling biological shieldings Equipment in the reactor control room (control panel and cabinets of the control and protection system) Cold trap of Liquid Na

Removal of the rolling biological shielding from the ring corridor

Dismantling and removal of a cold trap of liquid Na from working place

2. Installation of new equipment New reactor vessel Preparatory works on the installation of new reactor vessel have been performed: special accessories are made; the contract on welding of the case of the reactor with Na collector is concluded. New reactor vessel was delivered to JINR on 17.11.2008. It’s planned to finish its installation in 1 quarter 2009.

Welding operations for the vessel and the Na - collector

2. Installation of new equipment New rolling biological shieldings are completely assembled and installed at working place

3. Manufacturing of new technological equipment and electronics for the IBR-2M Manufacturing of three grooved water moderators was completed. Manufacturing of the executive mechanisms of the control and protection system was completed. For the most part the manufacturing of the electronics of the control and protection system and a new control desk comes to the end. The equipment of the technological parameters control system was manufactured and passed factory acceptance tests. The equipment was delivered to FLNP and its installation started.

4. Cryogenic moderators complex Design documentation for CM 202 for the beams 7-11 is completed. A contract with the NPO “Atom” on manufacturing CM 202 was concluded. The development of design documentation for CM 203 for beams 2-3 started. The GSPI completed the technological project for the CM complex. The design documentation on mesitylene supply pipelines for CM 202 and CM 203 was completed in the FLNP Design Bureau and forwarded to the NPO “Atom” for production. In the NPO “Atom” the manufacturing of rolling shieldings for the installation of CM 202 and CM 203 was completed. The NPO “Geliymash” delivered the equipment for cryogenic helium refrigerator KGU-700/15. The metal constructions for the installation of KGU-700/15 are being assembled. A contract on assembling of cryogenic pipelines for CM 202 and CM 203 was concluded. In NPO “Geliymash” the manufacturing of cryogenic pipelines and two cryostats is completed and this equipment was delivered to JINR.

5. Building and construction activities Preparation of the reserve control room for installation of equipment is finished. The basic civil works in the room of the system of reliable power supply system are executed. The most part of the planned activities in the reactor control room was performed.

Main control room

Financing of the IBR-2 modernization Estimation of total cost of the modernization project – about 11 M$. A total of about 956 k$ was spent as of January 1, 2009, which amounts to 80% of the plan (1170k$) for the year. In the financing plan for 2009 minimal necessary expenses for maintenance of physical start-up of the reactor - 1200 k $.

Main tasks of 2009 Completion of installation of the basic reactor equipment: - reactor vessel and the vessel rotating plugs - automated system for control and protection and its executive mechanisms - water moderators - movable reflector MR-3 - operators’ control panel - cold traps of liquid Na - demountable rail tracks and water moderators on trolleys of the rolling shieldings Filling of circuits with liquid Na Manufacturing and installation of an additional storage facility for the IBR-2 used fuel Installation of KGU and cryogenic pipelines Construction of a stand for testing transportation of mesitylene balls

Offer to PAC recommendations : In view of that 2009 is last year before reactor start-up, the PAC considers that timely and full financing of works according the plan has crucial importance for successful completion of the reactor modernization. 19
