United Way as a Platform for Change Million Dollar Roundtable and Tocqueville Leaders’ Summit Thank you: Mike Hayde (Host) Joyce and team All of you This morning: Touch on the environment (the disruptions facing all of us) United Way’s response (shaping our investment products) The critical nature of individual engagement (individual philanthropy) in driving our shared work Brian A. Gallagher President and CEO United Way Worldwide March 17, 2016

United Way Worldwide Network 1,800 local United Ways in 37 countries and territories $5.176 billion in total revenue  10.3 million individual donors  2.61 million volunteers  27,000 individuals, $10,000+ annually (Tocqueville) 500 donors, $1,000,000+ (Million Dollar Roundtable) $1 billion annually from 100 Global Corporate partners Two important points here: Five years into the worldwide merger, today, United Way is a truly global network United Way’s growth reflects changes to both our global communities as well as the needs and interests of our donors. Individual engagement Aligned, more strategic corporate partnerships

United Way Environment External Environment Speed of Change (income inequality, youth unemployment, jobless growth) Aging populations in several developed countries In the middle of a Digital Revolution Rapid and deep natural resource, weather and water challenges Growing importance of health in the economy United Way Environment Severe competition increasing Millennials engage for different reasons, in different ways Baby Boomer Generation retiring fast than they can be replaced Business Model under pressure We’re living in a historically disruptive time. The scale and speed of change has been remarkable. Today’s issues are highly complex, and they’re global. Youth unemployment (74 million worldwide) Between 2000 and 2050, the world's population over 60 years will have doubled—from 605 million to 2 billion. Worldwide, 1 in 9 people (750 million) lack access to clean water 232 million living outside of their country of origin (all-time high; Millions now fleeing Syria and other conflict areas)

Relevance and Position Embrace Complexities Focus on What’s Most Needed, Impact at Scale Help People & Organizations Work Together Better Powerful Brand, Millions Engaged We’re in a unique position to respond to the disruption AND be an even more strategic philanthropic partner. Embrace complexities (homelessness vs. affordable housing) Big and Small (local leadership, scaled and aligned impact) “Backbone organization” Again, strategic/meaningful engagement For you, it means… Reach into all communities in which you have an interest Consistent experience Scaled impact Aligned agendas and tailored, meaningful philanthropic experiences

Education Income Health At the root of United Way’s value as a partner for change is our platform. This becomes our shared platform for change—and the strategies in which you invest and engage. We believe four signature impact initiatives capture this focus: Early childhood success Opportunities for youth Social income mobility Access to health These initiatives resulted from the Leadership Forum in Amsterdam this past year. UWW and network-wide CEOs and Board Chairs: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, India, Mexico, South Africa, Taiwan, U.K., U.S., and South Korea.

Strategy: Key Actions Desired Outcome Bold Play Key Action Improve public understanding; Drive performance BP 1: Clarify and Execute Business Model Develop, train, and execute against a definitive Business Model accompanied by compelling, consistent brand messaging Grow donor base BP 2: Create Great Individual Experiences Engage individuals through shared digital services, accelerating top LUW practices, and establishing innovative alliances Meet/exceed changing corporate expectations BP 3: Reignite Corporate Relationships via Strategic Agreements Develop and execute agreements with corporate partners that define clear social impact/business value goals and are supported by network relationship management; Launch public relations initiative that drives corporate recognition Secure transformational gifts BP 4: Launch $10M Giving Society Attract transformational gifts through the creation of new $10M giving society; Strengthen entire pipeline of leadership and Tocqueville giving Work “as one” as a network BP 5: Strengthen Network Alignment Create the United Way of the Future via stronger culture/organizational design of LUWs and network collaboration/operating groups

The United Way Center on Human Trafficking & Slavery is a great example of the innovative, and highly-relevant, work in which you can invest. San Francisco Business & Tech Convening (Wal-Mart, Costco, Microsoft, Google, Facebook, UPS, Disney, HP AND leaders in the anti-trafficking community) WHAT THEY TOLD US: They want to do more; And they need partners (institutions and individuals) ALSO launching “Generation Freedom,” calling for greater Presidential leadership

Responding to the Refugee Crisis Caring for Europe’s Newcomers The Issue: Over 1.1 million migrants arrived in 2015. An additional 1.2 million are looking to reach Europe. 54% are men, 17% are women and 29% are children.    1 in 3 are children. Most first-time asylum applicants are Syrian (39%), Afghan (16%) and Iraqi (12%). 40% of Syrian migrants report post-secondary education, and 44% report secondary education.    The Opportunity: Support migrants as the leading source of workforce growth in Europe (70% of growth since 2005) Provide employment - the most important factor for successful integration in the long term. Reduce the significant risk of poverty for refugees, increasing the educational and economic potential of their children Refugees can significantly strengthen the economy as many take on work in declining occupations (Eg, machinists and tailors)

Waugh Family Foundation & Caribbean Expansion Individual Gift, Transformational Change “We’re impressed with United Way’s successful and proven business model, which we’ve been involved with for many years, as it provides governance and monitoring and efficient funding of local communities at a grassroots level.” Change to Date: Presence in Jamaica, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Trinidad & Tobago Focus on early childhood development, secondary school completion, and teacher training Jamaica, first Women’s Leadership Council outside of U.S. Trinidad & Tobago, National Day of Caring is the single largest volunteer event in the country Developing plans for the Dominican Republic, Turks and Caicos Islands, Bahamas, Barbados, St. Lucia, and El Salvador
