Forecasting the Weather Fronts. An Air Mass is a large body of air of relatively similar temperature and moisture. (humidity)
Weather Fronts Ms. Bireley’s 8 th Grade Science. What is a front? Boundary separating two masses of air of different densities and is the principal cause.
 The boundary of air masses of different temperatures  When 2 different air masses meet, they do not usually mix together, but crash into each other.

Predicting the Weather
What type of weather will a LOW pressure system bring? As a low pressure system approaches the pressure will drop due to rising air. As the air rises.
Air Pressure. High and Low Pressure Areas High pressure causes air to sink Usually results in several days of clear sunny skies Air rises in low pressure.

Fronts, Weather Instruments & Weather Maps

Weather Fronts

Warm Front Warm air approaches colder air and overtakes it…rising slowly and creating widespread showers.

Cold Front Cold front rapidly lifts warm air causing vigorous thunderstorms and rain

Stationary Front When a warm or cold front stops moving Once this boundary resumes its forward motion, it once again becomes a warm front or cold front

Occluded Front When a cold front overtakes a warm front.

Weather Maps & Station Models

Station Models on a Weather Map Several symbols combined to describe the weather of a given area.
