SURVEY! BEFORE-survey the chapter: Title, headings, subheadings Captions under pictures, charts, graphs or maps Review questions or teacher-made study guides Introductory and concluding paragraphs Summary

QUESTION! Turn the title, heading, and/or subheading into questions Read question at the end of the chapters/subheading Ask yourself: “What did my instructor say about this chapter or subject when it was assigned?” “What do I already know about this subject?”

READ! Look for answers to the questions you first raised Answer questions at beginning/end of chapters Read captions under pictures, charts, or graphs Note all italicized, underlined, or bold words/phrases Study graphic aids Reduce your speed for difficult passages Stop and reread if you need to Read only a section and recite after each section

RECITE! Orally ask yourself questions about what you just read OR summarize in your own words what you read Take notes from the text-write in your own words Underline/highlight important points Reciting: The more senses you use the more likely you are to remember! TRIPLE STRENGTH LEARNING: Seeing, saying, hearing QUADRUPLE STRENGTH LEARNING: Seeing, saying, hearing, writing

REVIEW! About a week-ongoing process Day 1: Day 2: Read and recite entire chapter Write questions in margins, or notebook for highlighted points Day 2: Page through the text and/or notebook to re-acquaint yourself with the important points Cover the right hand column of text/note-book & ask yourself questions from left hand column Orally recite or write answers from memory DEVELOP MNEMONIC DEVICES for memorization

REVIEW! (continued) Days 3, 4, & 5: Weekend: Alternate between your flash cards and notes and test yourself (orally or in writing) on the questions that you made Make additional flash cards if needed Weekend: Using the text and notebook, make a Table of Contents-list sub-topics you need to know from the chapter From the Table of Contents, make a study sheet Recite the information orally and in your own words as you review your study sheet
