Shaping the Image of Nursing at Munroe Heather Gifford, RN BSN Service Excellence Coordinator

Kathleen Bartholomew Kathleen Bartholomew, RN, MN, has been called the most important new voice in American Nursing. With breakthrough professional books such as SPEAK YOUR TRUTH ( HCPro, 2005) and ENDING NURSE-TO-NURSE HOSTILITY (HCPro, 2006), her unprecedented, dynamic speeches and public appearances, and her significant contributions to healthcare as one of the nation’s most sought-after nursing consultants, Kathleen is changing nursing by compassionately holding a mirror to the profession and exposing a century of hidden truths.

Image An image (from Latin: imago) is an artifact, for example a two-dimensional picture, that has a similar appearance to some subject—usually a physical object or a person. A mental image exists in an individual's mind: something one remembers or imagines. The subject of an image need not be real; it may be an abstract concept, such as a graph, function, or "imaginary" entity.

Image a mental representation or picture; idea produced by the imagination the personality presented to the public by a person, organization, etc

Negative Stereotypes Angel of Mercy Nurse Ratched Naughty Nurse Handmaiden Nurse Ratched was placed fifth on the American Film Institute's list of the 50 all-time greatest movie villains, behind only The Silence of the Lambs' Hannibal Lechter, Psycho's Norman Bates, Star Wars' Darth Vader and The Wizard of Oz's Wicked Witch of the West.

“Behavior is the mirror in which everyone shows their image” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Professional Behavior In communication With patients With peers With physicians Basis of professional communication is…. Powerless vs. Empowered

Dealing with Unprofessional Coworkers Horizontal Hostility Overt vs. Covert Personal vs. Professional Verbal vs. Non-verbal

DESC Communication Model D= Describe the behavior E= Explain the effect of the behavior S= State the desired outcome C= Consequence: say what will happen if the behavior continues.

Conflict Management Style How do you handle Conflict? Controlling Accommodating Avoiding Collaborating Compromising

I bought a piano once because I had the dream of playing As Time Goes By as some girl's leaning on it drinking a martini. Great image. But none of it worked out. I can't even play Chopsticks. But I've got a nice piano at my house! George Clooney

Professional Development How can we improve the image of nursing professionalism and excellence? Become certified in your specialty Become a member of your professional organization Participate in shared governance Precept and mentor the next generation of nurses

Excellence in Practice Excellence in practice requires continued education on current evidence-based nursing practice Attend conferences Read nursing research articles or participate in a journal club

Ethics and Image: Your Professional Responsibilities Healthcare providers are faced with seemingly unsolvable ethical dilemmas about decisions involving individual patients. Nurses must advocate for patients to protect their well being Nurses need to know how an ethics committee reviews a case

This is an exciting and overwhelming time This is an exciting and overwhelming time. Use the tools in this book to guide you through this challenging period and help you create a nursing image you can OWN.
